They're certainly not miscategorised. They're just a lot easier on the ears. However, due to the fact I've heard some very harsh music, my ears find it easy to appreciate stuff like Henry Cow. Their early stuff just sounds like jazzy Canterbury with avant flourishes. To you though it may be really difficult.

There's a Mormon church in my city about 5 blocks from my apartment. I highly doubt there are more than 50 Mormons in here though (excluding the American immigrants who work for the church).

I am the ultimate fanboy. It took a while to get past Geddy's screech on the first 4 or 5 albums, but they don't bother me any more. Aside from the lyrics on Dog Years, I pretty much love everything else that they have done. "Net boy, net girl" from Virtuality isn't their finest hour and neither is "Tough-talking hood boys in pro-team logo knock-offs" from Test for Echo. Basically, Test For Echo has their biggest blunders to my ears, but it is still a really good album.
I used to be a big Rush fanboy like that a couple of years ago, but then I started listening to avant.
Avant does very little for me. It is supposed to mean some sort of prog ascension I suppose, but I just don't get the appeal.
There's lots of different kinds of avant-prog though. It's not all unlistenable.
Yes, I have found some albums that are labelled as avant that I like, but I figure if I like them that they really aren't avant, and were just miscategorized.

Does the current Shred title have somethign to do with Glenn Branca?
More Coltrane from my perspective, but I'm not being particular, it's a very general idea. We all Shredders must unite to rise up and transcend this plane of existence. We must become beings of pure energy (and Charlie Sheen).
I must have seen that interview 4 or 5 times by now. It's just spectacular.
