I'm not a Metal fan at all, so Death Growl in definitely out for me! I just don't get it, it all sounds the same to this old prog addict.

I love both.  I used to only really be into the clean vocals, but now I feel that each can serve a purpose.  There are times I'll listen to a death metal album, and try to imagine clean vocals in it's place.  Sometimes I can't imagine it working.  It brings a special feel clean can't do.

Right.  Hey guys, manofmystery doesn't approve.  Guess we have to quit now, right?

I knew there was a reason I can never stay interested enough to post on this forum.  Everytime I come back I notice how everyone thinks they're a bloody music guru

They just can't get used to the thought that bands like Meshuggah, MoTW or Opeth are among the most innovative artists around, that they are truly progressive while most of their idols from the past can't come up with anything creative.

Don't get me wrong, I like prog classics like Genesis or Jethro Tull, but they're CLASSICs, their time has passed - it's obvious that there has to be someone to come up with new ideas and new ways of musical expression.

But there always has to be a group of haughty prog purists who, paradoxically, don't accept novelties!

I can understand that they're not into it. I used to hate death metal vocals as well.  It's just that everytime I come on this board I see people telling others what to think

I honestly don't think there's really a cut and dry answer to this question. Quite honestly, sometimes the death growl fits the mood of a piece better than clean singing ever would, and vice-versa. They both have their place, and have both been used by bands to great effect.

That being said, usually when I'm listening to a great song that utilized both cleans and death growls, I generally find myself enjoying the cleanly sung portions a tad more, so I guess I have to make that my ultimate decision.

Scar Symmetry is the perfect blend of clean and death in my honest opinion; "Pitch Black Progress" is the album to check out.

Scar Symmetry is definitely great when it comes to such a combination, but I still find myself preferring Mikael Akerfeldt's vocal work in Opeth, overall.

A combination of clean, death growls, screams, crazy rappingand funny noises. Like in Sikth. Basically as much variety as possible

That is, if they truly are. I won't comment on MoTW because I haven't heard it but as for the other two, they are making something original but whether they are necessarily amongst the most innovative artists around in a general sense is a matter of debate and surely not set in stone.   And new ways of musical expression - sorry, I don't hear anything that drastically different in terms of expression from 80s and 90s metal overall in either band's music.  And while they may be more original as of the present day than what some washed out prog rock bands from the 70s are up to now, I don't think they are as progressive as KC or Can at their best.  That is just my opinion and since I am a metalhead, you'll find it harder to change mine than of progheads who don't like metal. While I understand that people don't like growls, it doesn't mean it's justified to write off bands with growls so I am with you on that, but let's not infer resentment on that count.

Interesting how hot this topic still is, not liking growls is understandable, dismissing them doesn't make sense.
Any type of vocals can work, growls have a more rhythmical function in music while clean vocals are usually more melodious, but both can be equally expressive and functional.

I agree with you. The Exorcist growls detract from the composition; in fact, it's quite cliche at this point. Ozzie and Black Sabbath made ominous music without sounding like the second coming of Froggy the demon toad.

In metal I'll take a growl over clean vocals any day. Go all the way or don't make this kind of music at all.

ETA: I should say that I have no problem with clean vocals in stoner/doom bands like The Melvins, Kyuss and Boris. But then you also have bands where there's kind of a middle ground between clean and growling, like High on Fire and Electric Wizard.

Well, I never liked this strange sounding vocals before I got into OPETH.
This band is outstanding and they mix straight vocals and growling.
And for this music - I don't care. It's great!

I usually either find growls funny or painfully cliché.

You know how each era of music seems to have it's share of embarrassing moments that at a later date everybody wishes had never happened? The memory of death growls will be one of them.

I find the real issue is with most metal musicians not really knowing how to use their voice properly, so they resort to raspy yelling. Any good progressive metal band has someone who is almost always a trained vocalist, and it shows. Singing is not easy (for most, anyway), and if you hit a wrong note it's more obvious than the guitarist sliding around on the neck. I'm a huge fan of both equally, but it drives me up a wall when bands like Atreyu have both terrible clean and gutteral, yet are massively successful over bands with much more skill and songwriting prowess.

Bullet for My Valentine is another example of metal done wrong IMOP. Keep in mind this is coming from a rabid old-school extreme metal fan, so of course modern metal sounds tame to these ears lol. When I say "wrong", I don't mean it's objectively wrong of course, but bands like that whom make use of double bass and down tune guitars in a pretentious manner almost to "secure" their metal status; it's like if Pantera one day decided to write pop songs but keep their instruments lol. Bands who sound one way, but appear another for marketing reasons will always lose points for me. I'm not a fan of labels snagging and beefing up bands for consumption; call it what you want, but I call it McDonalds rock.

Apart from that, the loudness, aggression and violence was new and exciting in the 80s. Instead of moving on, metal musicians have overspecialized in it and even got fussy over what kind of growls are the best or whatever to the point that it gets sterile and same-sounding.  It's interesting that in the 80s, metal was about pushing the frontiers of extreme-ness and then having done that, in the 90s, they got very concerned about how they are perceived and therefrom began the obsession with technicality in death metal, those so-called opera singers who can barely hold onto wobbly high As and so on and so forth.  I only ever got into metal for how starkly it portrayed the uglier shades of life - I am sure as a "rabid old school extreme metalhead" you know all about that LOL - but that has somewhere become less important and even 'un-intellectual' in metal, pity!
