Topic: Random Artist Button Posted: February 26 2011 at 15:46 |
I tried searching the forum first to see if anyone suggested this, but no results came up.
So, my request is to have a "random artist button" so it can be easy to find new artists to listen to. You would press the link and it would take you to a random profile of an artist. It might also be possible to make it filterable, i.e., being able to stumble through only a specific genre.
What do you all think?

Doesn't the "Random Review" button we have essentially accomplish the same thing? It also gives you a random artist while presenting the random album.

...that moment you realize you like "Mob Rules" better than "Heaven and Hell"

Yeah, but many people wouldn't know about that and it's not filterable.
Instead, I suggest putting the review button in with it combined. There can be a general "random page" page created that has plenty of filtering options. Once you select how you want it filtered, the button could appear as a temporary toolbar at the top of the page. This way you wouldn't have to go back and forth just to get to a new page.

Oh, and even if you are insistent the random review button is enough, you can only stumble through albums that have been reviewed. There are plenty albums (that may be really good) that haven't been reviewed yet.

Indeed, it should be filterable by genre.

Besides ignoring the many, many albums with no reviews, random review is also inherently biased towards more popular albums with more reviews, which defeats the purpose of randomly selecting an album. I hit it 5 times and got Genesis: W&W, Camel: s/t, Herbie Hancock: The Piano, Mostly Autumn: Storms Over Still Water, and Santana: Abraxis. What discoveries.

Don't see the point. I find most gems by searching within a specific genre for albums that have a max of say 20-30 ratings. If you also make a selection for the years when the genre was really hot, you can do some real discoveries.
