I actually think of them as more of a post metal band. Play "Oceanic" by Isis and "Leviathan" back to back and you'll get where I'm coming from.

No.  Just... no.

ISIS and Mastodon share a similar heavy tonality and sludgy tendencies, but Mastodon are not post metal.  Not remotely so.

Mastodon are difficult to descrie but technical thrash  metal is one way

I dunno. I wouldn't have noticed it either until I really payed attention to the riff at the chorus of "Naked Burn". The "saaave yourself" part. And then everything just started falling into place a bit. Plus, all the members will say that they count Neurosis as a huge influence so, I dunno, I'm not saying they ARE post-metal, I'm just saying that's what I hear them as. Approve
