Dunno how many people know me here seeing as I mainly post reviews but don't come in the forums very often. Long story short, I'm a British musician, currently living in Germany, but looking to head over to America/Canada.
No idea where I want to go, where's good etc, so I'm generally gonna look for a band and go wherever that leads me. Haven't done any online ads etc yet but just thought I'd post on here, see if anyone comes up.
So if anyone here needs a guitarist/vocalist (though not at the same time), or knows of any bands that needs one, get in touch! Anything prog is cool, preferably Prog Metal but don't mind.
If you want to know about me, check out my Facebook or Myspace. http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=513631076&sk=info

Or if anyone can recommend any place that has a good music scene that'll be worth checking out, that'll be cool. And a prog scene would be even better, if such a thing exists.

Whatever you do, don't go to Central Florida. Musicians are so bitchy and flaky there.

But there seems to be quite a few progressive metal bands or at least extreme metal bands coming out of Florida. |

Doesn't mean you want to play with any of them. |

If in fact there is a high volume of musicians who are snooties and flakes in Florida, that would be a sad deal indeed because there are truly hot players in the southern U.S. Impeccable players for sure! I'm surprised many of them would come off in that way. Edited by TODDLER - January 28 2011 at 11:16 |

Try and locate clubs that set up showcases where between 5 and 6 bands perform on the weekend. You can make connections quickly because there will be others there (in the audience) looking to form a new act. They may have a P.A. system, gigs, place for practice, but just haven't found the right guitarist. Many head masters show to gigs with intent to steal the right player from a performing band and also offer them better money. They might meet you in the audience and set up an audition for you. Canada has great progressive musicians but I know nothing of a prog scene as when I traveled there it was with a corporation that sponsered show bands. Sometimes getting the best results is when you play a showcase with 4 or 5 bands. 2 members from one band and 2 from another may want to team up with you forming a entirely new group and presto you have the right chemistry. It's a bit unfair to the bands they are working with but they are miserable anyway and are looking to form something new. Just don't climb aboard with anyone unless you know for sure they have some connections to work. Edited by TODDLER - January 28 2011 at 11:19 |

That's some good suggestions and info there Toddler, thanks for that. And thanks to the other posters.
Baltimore and Delaware sound like interesting places to check out, though not quite sure about New York. I've always lived in small towns my entire life, and whilst I have no problems going into big cities, NY would be like the Death Star to me! (and also, the cost of living there is pretty high isn't it?)
Someone suggestd Boston to me, and whilst I've heard before about Boston having a good music scene, I kind of figured it would be mostly jazz. Is this right?

I travelled through Boston many years ago when I toured up state N.Y., the New England states, and further north crossing the border. It was quick travel and fast life....and had no time to stop and observe what was most important. You should surf the internet galaxy and research recent music activity in Boston. This is a turn of the cards for me. You having the desire to explore the U.S. that is. All I wanted as a musician for decades was England. And it was during the mid to late 70's. I did have the opportunity to travel along side great English prog musicians in America though. It was the best part of my life. It's very pathetic I suppose because the grass is probably not greener on the other side? All the American musicians who were obessed with the English.....wow!....someone could write a book. and here you are wanting to leave the place? I'm braindead and I suppose England has changed quite a bit since the days of Man, Hawkwind, and Gong. Being a traveling musician is a tough and complicated life. good luck!

Avoid the South and Midwest, obviously. Boston and New York would probably be the best places in the States. I don't know about Canada.
Honestly, you're probably better off in Europe if you're interested in forming a prog band. |

What prog-related bands in the NW are you talking about?
