I agree. Also, I don't think Ian Anderson gets enough props for his acoustic guitar playing...

Ian even got a kudos (not the candy bar) from none other than Steve Lukather. He must have impressed him!

I can highly recommend Fire Merchants - Fire Merchants if you happen to like John Goodsall. Tony C. Thanks for that! Yeah, Goodsy is the bomb! If you only hear ONE JG song in your life, it should be "Deadly Nightshade" from the Brand X LP "Masques."

I completely agree. He was one of the first I thought about when I saw this topic. Love his sound, and he never overdoes it. It's always just right. Glad to see that Alan Morse gets some mentions for his interesting style and technique. I am a huge fan of Roine Stolt, and I don't think he gets the credit he deserves. One of my favorite guitarists of all time. Steve from Marillion is also worth mentioning. He doesn't really have a very distinct personal sound, but his parts always fit the rest of the music perfectly. |

My 2 fave guitarists are Tony Bourge (Budgie) very underated! and Paul Macdonnell of Automatic Fine Tuning. AFT NEVER get mentioned anywhere and he's a genius I think. Both bands and guitarists are well under appreciated in my view.

Exactly! I've been pondering that ever since I've first visited this site. What, exactly, is prog?? Let's face it, Stéphane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Roger Chaput and Louis Vola of "The Quintette of the Hot Club of France" were the King Crimson of their era! Imagine if Django had access to a Les Paul?! Generally, this site seems to revolve around electronic prog (not entirely, but largely), so I'd guess that a "prog guitarist" as used in this syntax is an electric guitarist who has evolved beyond basic blues scales & utilizes a wide range of elements from classical, jazz, folk, and global influences. Would this make someone like Andy Summers a prog guitarist? There's the rub! Many jazz-rock fusion artists are under-appreciated on this site, I'd suggest that John Goodsall of Brand X remains one of the amazing innovators in this field! Upcoming talents include Mike Keneally, kids like Scale the Summit, and Ray Bennett of the revived Flash (having switched from bass guitar to lead guitar). |

I'd say a guitarist in a progressive rock band is what it means, especially since prog can contain anyone of those elements you listed. I'd say the guitarist from Riverside (Piotr Grudziński) is pretty under appreciated (as is the rest of the band). His guitar sound seems to incorporate a lot of that "classic rock/bluesy" feel, while also having a metal sound to it as well. |
