Threads now get closed automnatically after about two months after the last post. Isn't that too soon? It's often that I want to post something in an existing thread instead of creating a new one, but the existing one is already closed.

I didn't think it was as soon as that. I don't think it's automatic either, I think M@x runs a programme every so often. Not sure either, if it's only inactive threads which are closed.

I'll ask M@x to pop by and explain. Meanwhile, if there are any threads anyone wants re-opened (other than those closed by an admin!) , just drop a PM to an admin,

You're right, Bob, thanks. I did a check-up and in all forum sections the first locked threads always appear with the last post entered on May 22 2010, which is exactly the same date that I found when I first discovered this in November. That means M@x ran this programme for threads that haven't been active since May 22, and didn't run it ever since. So it's not automatical like I thought.

Recently I've been been doing many forum searches and I was left with the impression that many threads were locked (but not by Admins) after two months since the last post. That is why I thought that the "automatic closing" that I imagined was updated from 6 months to 2 months.

My understanding is that automatic shutdown occurs after 6 months and it was implemented to make the site run faster.  Apparently an excess of open threads slows things down.

I ran the script 1 month ago for 6 months old (inactive) threads.

There is no such thing as AUTO CLOSE topics from what I know.

Yes the inactive clarification is important.  And also for those who aren't aware, reanimation is possible if you just ask an admin. Big smile

And if there is no admin around, contact Slarti - he has a button to stop time.
