Apart from the many I agree with mentioned here.
I think...

Miller Anderson...who played with Keef Hartley.

Zal Cleminson  The Sensational Alex Harvey Band...Big influence on me.

Ray Fenwick for his work  on the early Ian Gillan Band. His Solo's on 'Child in time' are never far from my
consciousness.

Charley Whitney in Family...Leslie West in Mountain.  ooh!    that'll do pig!

I stopped following Enchant after Break, but Doug Ott turned in some great guitar work on the ones before that: Blueprint, Wounded, Time Lost. Thumbs Up

I'm always delighted by Joni Mitchell's playing, plus I haven't seen a female mentioned yet. A very talented lady that holds her own with the likes of Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Robben Ford, Jeff  Baxter, Larry Carlton, Wayne Shorter, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Lukather, and a host of other top notch musicians. She defiantly has poetic & jazz quality - which I would consider "progressive", but not prog rock.

I will answer with a few videos:

and who is the man?  Roman Bunka. probably the most underappreciated guitar players of all.

I would also like to mention the late Christian Boulé of Clearlight. here 2 tracks from his first solo album "Photo Musik" ("Elastic Minute" and "Orange Climax").

A shot of me as High Priestess of Gaia during our fall festival. Ceterum censeo principiis obsta

how has Omar Rodriguez-Lopez not been mentioned yet? Unique style.

And of course, McLaughlin.

Well, Martin Barre, Robin Trower, that...that guy from Primus. Hell, even Snakefinger. I think I have nothing to add in regards to my personal favorite underrated guitarists...

OH! I happen to believe (don't laugh) that Matthew Bellamy is actually a very good guitarist, and yet I never really hear that much about his skills as a guitarist. Just sayin'.

John McLaughlin is an under appreciated guitarist?

Really? I thought he was tolerably known.Wink

Speaking of Miles and his guitar wizards.... Just want to mention Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas of Miles' electric band classic albums.

After watching my new Crack the Sky dvd, I have to add both Rick Witkowski and Bobby Hird. Excellent players.

Also, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is terrific. Agree wholeheartedly.

I would say all or most prog guitarists are underrated compared to how great they actually are. Even the prog giants like Frank Zappa and Steve Howe are under appreciated when you put them up to the scale of the world.

A couple from the obscure 'bin';

Mario Millo (Sebastian Hardie/Windchase) and Ray Simenauer (Airlord).

Oh and another thumbs-up for Tommy Emmanuel.
