Los Endos played their first gig in their home town last night. The band are, unsurprisingly, a Genesis tribute band concentrating mainly on the Gabriel/Hackett era but extending up to "Wind and Wuthering". The line up is the typical Genesis one - Dennis Stewart - vocals, percussion, drums and dressing up Last night's set concentrated mainly on the "Second's Out" era, the set list (in chronological order) was - Musical Box (end section) The sound was excellent, the band are all brilliant musicians (as is neccessary to play this material) and they put on a great show. Dennis Stewart is not particularly a Gabriel sound-alike but he is an excellent singer and some of his costumes were great, (the one to demonstrate the four foot restriction of humanoid height was a gory favourite). I especially liked the lawnmower and the devil/angel at the end of Supper's Ready. Gary Lucas is a brilliant guitarist and Martin Clarke deserves credit for carrying a twin-neck guitar throughout the gig (and for his theatre-shaking bass pedals). Drummer Matt Scales was impressive and Alan Pearson managed to duplicate all the Banks' keyboard sounds with only 3 keyboards. I've not seen any of the other various Genesis tributes but I would definitely go and see Los Endos again. Minor gripes - they could be a bit more subtle on the quieter moments. Highlight of the gig - well, it was really great to hear Entangled and Battle of Epping Forest (I wasn't expecting those) but the best bit was the look on the bass player's face when he thought the singer wasn't going to make it back on stage in time for the beginning of Epping Forest after the interval! |

Hi Alan
Many thanks for the review and kind words. We hope to play at the Queens again in the near future - nice venue and great audience! For the keyboard fans, the reason for using only three keyboards is I can't get any more in the car. Makes it interesting when I have to switch sounds from time to time (usually while singing!) I did hump five round at one point but it is just too much. Basically I use a Roland XP30 with Prosoloist Rack which covers the Banks synth - early era. I have a Hammond XK3C for organ sounds. The Roland Fantom FA76 provides the piano/Mellotron choir/RMI piano sounds and a sampler provides the Watcher Mellotron combo and Strings. Thanks again and I'll try and pop back from time to time! PS It's not our home town - we're homeless - I live in Billingshurst, West Sussex! R Alan

Thanks for the info Alan, much appreciated (as I can sympathise with the problems of lugging gear around in a car!).
I should correct my review then - I guess Hornchurch is only singer Dennis Stewart's home town then?
I should also apologise to drummer Matt Scales for omitting his vocal contribution, particularly on
"Entangled". |

Yes - Dennis lives in Barking actually.
I started the band seven years ago with a mate who lives in Crawley, who left. Gary is in Kingston, as is Stuart, the man responsible for the hi-fi quality sound. Dominic (ligths) lives in north London and Martin lives in Waltham Abbey. Matt is in Southend! Yes- rehearsals are somewhere in the middle! R Alan |

I had to laugh when I saw the photos of your gig at The Grey Horse. I actually did a gig there on the night of the England v Germany World Cup semi-final. The crowd was pretty small that night too.

Well we played The Grey Horse twice - the second time because we couldn't believe the turn out on the first because of the European footie.
The second time we had our new drummer Matt there and once we got his kit on the stage there was no room left for us! My rack was standing on a pile of beer crates just off stage! Never again..................... R Alan

Been there done that. I once did a gig where the singer had to stand on beer crates!
We had a drummer with a Simmons kit and it would never work at The Grey Horse - the voltage used to send it bananas.
