I would imagine that one of John's favorites is Frank. But as for him playing with Frank? ... nahhh ... there is too much ego in DT's stuff and you can't do that on Frank's albums ... it's more music than it is ego. John would look kinda silly and childish in the middle of it all.
Better choice would be John going against a John McLaughlin so Mc could show him what to do with notes other than just make a band sound repetitioius! |

Al di Meola vs. John McLaughlin |
You are taking me back to that old music college mentality now. It really was a back in the woods macho mentality and the fact that McLaughlin was a totally diverse type of player from DiMeola was completely dismissed by all involved. It's completely insulting to set up guitar contests with rock players or fusion players because Joe blow is playing fast and showboating and getting the same credit that Harry the shy guitar player is ...when in the real world, Harry the shy one is playing fast passages that take more skill than Joe blow and are light years ahead of his overall ability. Society is pretty good at pointing out differences with players in the sports world but, with music they are not.

Add Vai and you can make it 3 Steves, would be a bit weird but who knows, talent would not be in shortage! |
How about four, with Morse!

I have them together in my dream band on another forum. Imagine the extended free-form jam, with crazy drumming and synths or something in the background

Shawn Lane and Chris Poland (obviously if you know me)
Latimer and Gilmour
Townsend and Akerfeldt (really, their solos are very musical in the metal context, never w**kfests, even when they play quickly)
|
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Brian May in his good years was indeed amazing and unique, March of the Black Queen being one of the seldom-mentioned prog masterpieces.
Steve Morse deserves all credit too, another master in his own right.

Honestly the Fripp Zappa one......mostly just to hope they'd strike up conversation. And I'd just sit there in awe and completely not understand the high level at which their brains were operating.
