Then you don't understand Magma. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though; not everyone does. |
I think this is a real important factor in this poll. Magma upon first listen isn't very grabbing at all--whereas you can pop in Hot Rats and totally dig into it within the first minute. Frank Zappa is much more instant gratification.
It takes a lot of listens over the course of several albums to really grasp the intricacies of Magma, there's a lot more going on than meets the eye.

^I completely disagree.
Take 'Attahk' for example, it grabbed me instantly because I was a fan of fusion.
I doubt someone instantly understands compositions like Peaches en Regalia, Crusin' for Burgers (Zappa in New York), Echidna's Arf and so many more. The same goes for Magma, the whole M.D.K. composition and the rest of their albums.
I started liking Zappa years ago, but I finally understood (I think) him 2 years ago, when it all clicked.

^ Try listening to Magma starting with Emehntehtt-Re and tell me you could understand it within the first five listens.
A lot of Frank's work is intentionally shallow for comedic effect. Not to say he doesn't have a lot of great material in his works, but the greatness is just so much easier to scoop off the top than the intricacies of Zeuhl

He can't try starting with E-Re, he's already known Magma for a while. Plus, it's possible to enjoy anything on first listen - and you don't need to understand an artist's music to prefer them.

I never said that you can't enjoy something on first listens, if not understand. Neither did I say you need to understand to prefer something over another, but in my opinion, that 'preference' would be incomplete, anyway, nobody (at least myself) knows when you fully understood the music of certain band/artist.

I'm just trying to say that if you have two bands to listen to, and one at first seems really great, and the other seems a bit daunting at first, which are you likely to prefer (at least in the short-term)?

I'm not sure what you mean by "understand," but E-Re was the first album that I heard by Magma and it clicked after about 2 listens. It took me a lot longer to get Zappa. Not saying that one is better than the other but that was my experience.

The time is now is actually the time has gone. Sorry (eh?) but Magma have had to bow out. The great make way for the great. So it goes...
