Well, it's unclassifiable really. I'm being broad in my definitions here.

I have yet to compile my list but it do find it strange that no mention of Neurosis has been made. At least two of their albums will crack my top ten.

Well thats because its more metal in general than PtS, but its still avant guarde rock/metal for the most part. Besides, only about 5 or 6 albums on my list are Post metal, the rest all come under Experimental.

Well that album especially is much more chaotic than most of the bands they influenced. I would give Times of Grace a try. It's a better album in my opinion but they are definitely an aquired taste. I too am surprised at the lack of participation on this thread but i am partially guilty myself.

^Actually my problem is that its overly repetative and doesnt seem to go anywhere, so probably not chaotic enough.

Yeah, Neurosis don't get much attention here on PA even though they are considered to be the pioneers of one of PA's subgenres.
I've got Times Of Grace and A Sun That Never Sets, both are pretty good, not sure which I prefer. I do feel they are a bit repetitive though.

^I think there problem is that Isis came along and took what they did and then went so much further in a more melodic manner that it left Neurosis for dead.

I never really thought Neurosis were too repetive especially compared to the myriad other bands that came after them but i do concur that they do lack melody. By the time Celestial had come out Isis had replaced Neurosis as my favorite band but i lost interest after Panopticon. Now i know there are listed under the post/math label but what do you guys think of Envy. There earlier stuff is much heavier and to me A Dead Sinking Story is a maserpiece and would easily be in my top five.

I know i'm veering off topic a bit but what makes it difficult for me to make a list is the fact that certain bands, e.g. Amorphis,My Dying Bride,Katatonia,Tiamat and Envy, are not considered experimental/post metal which throws a wrench into my list. I might just make a list anyways and throw those bands in because i think they truly belong. Just my opinion and i'm sure that is fodder for another topic.

That's a valid point. Most of those bands have been suggested for inclusion at some point. The majority of PMT members are usually split on controversial additions, and thus we need unanimous 'yes' votes for these artists to be added. I'd like to see Katatonia on here at some point, but I doubt that will happen, even though My Dying Bride and Anathema are here.
