    Posted: September 12 2010 at 00:56
Hey guys, I was bored yesterday so I made this little Intro to Prog type playlist. It's lacking a few classics, I know-Gentle Giant, Renaissance, Rush and Jethro Tull(the latter two because I'm not a big fan)-but I did my best to cover the basics. I tried to squeeze in a little bit of everything, while shying away from 10 minute+ epics, although there are a couple in there. I'm pretty proud of how a few of them flow into each other, too-the Hawkwind/Porcupine Tree/Mastodon sequence worked out beautifully.

Anyhow, here's the list. Tell me what you think.

  1. Firth of Fifth-Genesis
  2. Hyperventilate-Frost*
  3. Jerusalem-Emerson, Lake and Palmer
  4. Babylon-Aphrodite's Child
  5. Goliath-The Mars Volta
  6. Shine On Brightly-Procol Harum
  7. Death Walks Behind You-Atomic Rooster
  8. Refugees-Van Der Graaf Generator
  9. Ifran Klarhet Till Klarhet-Anglagard
  10. In the Court of the Crimson King-King Crimson
  11. All Over Now-Pendragon
  12. The Moor-Opeth
  13. Lateralus-Tool
  14. The Psychedelic Warlords(Disappear In Smoke)-Hawkwind
  15. Lazarus-Porcupine Tree
  16. The Last Baron-Mastodon
  17. Family Snapshot-Peter Gabriel
  18. Olsen Olsen-Sigur Ros
  19. Comfortably Numb-Pink Floyd
  20. Rattims Freizz-Koenjihyakkei
  21. Gone Hollywood-Supertramp
  22. Innuendo-Queen
  23. Close to the Edge-Yes
Heaven's made a cesspool of us all.

Would be too much to introduce someone imo.

But anyway, obviously depends on the person listening. Some people are simply not receptive to music that goes beyond certain boundaries.

Others however have an "eureka" moment whatever you play.Tongue

Nice list. It covers a lot of bases. I tried to do something like this just before the summer and just got a load of flack for it from anyone that wasn’t a new member.

I have a friend that I wanted to give a good insight into prog using a compilation of important and “typical” tracks from 1969 until now.

I basically asked for lists that could summarize 40 years of prog (each decade to be represented) on a single CD (lasting 78 minutes).

Anyway, outside all the abuse, all I got was ready prepared favorite lists not spanning the 40 years of prog, not representing each decade and not fitting into the time limit of 78 minutes. It was very disappointing.

I’ll look up my list that I eventually came up with and post it here. But I have a question 40footwolf, how many minutes does your list last for? With a proverbial gun to your head, how would you trim it down to 78 minutes?

I know this isn’t what your post is about, but I’m just interested and generating discussion.

It's good to impose limits.

It's close to three hours. 78 minutes...man. That's a toughie. Rounding included, I think I would keep these ones:

Firth of Fifth(10)
The Court of the Crimson King(9)
Olsen Olsen(8)
Shine On Brightly(4)
The Psychedelic Warlords(Disappear in Smoke)[7]
Lazarus(4)
Goliath(7)
Close to the Edge(19)
The Moor(11)

It comes out to 79 minutes, actually, but I think that it touches close to all the essential facets of prog(depends on who you ask, obviously, but IMO). Also it wouldn't necessarily be in that order, but that would be the selection. I looked through and tried to pick not necessarily the "best", but which ones would leave the biggest impression on the listener, so that they would have a firm idea of what prog sounds like in the abstract.

^Lazarus? Confused That's a pop song, I showed it to my friends and like it, but they can't believe I like this hehe. It's good and I like it, but I would give something like Blackest Eyes or Trains, where PT shows their great ability to fuse pop with more adventurous sensibilities.

If I were doing it, I think that I would try to cover music that fits into all of the PA (so called-Prog) categories, but I'd like to divide into separate musical periods as well.  Radio friendly classic rock such as "Comfortably Numb" wouldn't make my list.  Comus, Hancock, Magma, Art Zoyd, Tangerine Dream, Can and The Soft Machine would  make my list, I think, but I'd try to achieve as much diversity as possible.

But Lazarus is so good... WinkLOL

Seriously though, if Porcupine Tree ever decided to do a straight up pop album, I'd buy it. To the OP: The only thing I can see missing from your list is possibly something by Magma... otherwise I think it does an awesome job of covering a lot of bases in prog. Nicely done.

I have already posted this list in similar threads, but I'm afraid I'm only covering 70's British Symphonic Prog... almost. It's not that I don't want to be more helpful, but I don't know enough from the rest of Prog to make a more complete list. It goes like this (and I do have this CD burned and really like to hear it).

1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I-V, just as it is in the Wish you were here album) - Pink Floyd.
2. The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson.
3. Tarkus (edit, only Eruption - Stones of Years - Battlefield)- ELP.
4. And You And I - Yes.
5. Firth of Fifth - Genesis.
6. Thick as a Brick (the Live, bursting out version) - Jethro Tull.
7. Starless (the live version from Collectible King Crimson Vol 1, CD 1) - King Crimson.

I have two King Crimson songs because both lineups were very important in British Prog, and were almost completley different (except for Fripp). I think this are some of the most widely popular songs from each of this bands, which are perhaps the most representative bands from the british prog movement.

However, I do have been wanting to make a complete Prog collection of songs which includes all eras, all sub-genres, and many countries and languages. However I would need the forum's help and do several threads to accomplish it and I have been too lazy to get into it. I would have to do several Top 10 lists for favourite bands, albums, songs, etc; from different genres, and then count repeated mentions, and then do a poll to choose the top ten repetitions... etc... once this was made to find the favourite King Crimson song by another member (and the result was Starless by the way).

I didn't divide it into separate categories because, sadly, I'm not well versed enough in all categories to have a ton of expertise on the general layout of prog. I wrestled with whether to put on Comfortably Numb or not, and it ends up mostly being there for contrast. Like, "All this nutty stuff is prog, and then this radio friendly thing you recognize is prog too, it turns out."
