I only know well enough Led Zeppelin, which I really like. I've still got to get to know the other bands... but first there's lots of proggier stuff I have to dig.

I'll vote for Sabbath out of this list. I've never understood the love of Zeppelin, and what little I've heard of Uriah Heep hasn't impressed me at all. I like Deep Purple, but Sabbath is better.

I've a lot of time for the first two Jeff Beck solo albums, Truth and Cosa Nostra (Beckola). In the liner notes of the twoforone CD of these albums, we are told about how Beck wanted to take the heavy sound of Vanilla Fudge (Bogert & Appice) for his music. You get it in some tuneson Truth although we have really a hybrid blues rock album - and look at the session musicians - and it is pretty wholesale on Beckola. Beck's drummer got involved in May Blit
![]() I also think for those who care about roots of heavy rock, listen to Terry Reid's second album Superlungs. I passing I have a lot of time for Stray's first album as a pioneering example of heavy rock - and these guys were still in their mid teens |

Deep Purple was an easy one for me. Deep Purple is much more diverse than the others. Symphonic, hard rock...borderline punk on "In Rock", metal...jazz/rock fusion and avant garde(especially their live material) and bluesy. Everything I love about prog.rock and music in general is in Deep Purple. Some albums are stronger than others, but I manage to find some gold nuggets in their turkeys. Might be why my radio programme is titled "The Purple Room".
![]() I would've thrown in Thin Lizzy in this poll as well. I think Thin Lizzy's "Bad Reputation" LP is a masterpiece. Never heard anything quite like it since. In fact, shouldn't Thin Lizzy be on prog.archives? Some of their ealier material certainly qualifies as "prog.related".

Four great bands, Heep just ahead of the others thanks to Ken Hensley's Hammond work.

I probably listen to Led Zeppelin the most out of these but I like Black Sabbath the best, mainly b/c of their first album.

Sabbath for those first 4 albums Brilliant Sabbath Purple Heep Zepp Never really understood the fuss about Zeppelin good as they where did they really ever make a master piece of an album ? Zepp 4 maybe, 3 was good to but thats it for me never really been a fan. Sabbath and Purple just made better albums in my humble Opinion. and Zepplin happen to be one worse gigs i ever went to, Knebworth was terrible. |

^ Zeppelin's live shows, as I understand it, did tend to be pretty miserable. But as far as masterpiece albums, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti come pretty close

Overall, I'll doubtlessly go with Led Zeppelin, although if I were asked to rank them by the album(s) I like most, it's probably be Deep Purple.
So, based on individual albums, it would look like this: 1) Deep Purple - Deep Purple In Rock 2) Led Zeppelin - LZ II 3) Uriah Heep - Look At Yourself 4) Black Sabbath - Hell, I don't know, one of the first few, I suppose @ Hawkwise: Nice sig! Could you slow the cycle down a bit? I's like to get a longer look at the individual covers.. Edited by npjnpj - September 14 2010 at 00:59 |
