Even though he is a fantastic drummer, I think it is a good thing he leaves the band.
He seems to have taken the band in a direction other than it should have gone...
He is at his best when he is not leading a band (i.e., I think his work on the first two O.S.I. albums is the best he's done, because he was guided towards a certain style rather than force feeding his own approach to others...)
Best of moves for everyone involved in my humble opinion...

I disagree. Portnoy's had the band under his thumb for years. Maybe without his presence, DT will start making music I care about again. That's not a slight to Mike, or anything. He's great, and DT was more or less his project for so long, but they seem to have stagnated in recent years, and Portnoy's controlling nature may have had something to do with that, is all.

There wasn't much 'secret' about that.

I first read the MP letter as "I need a break from DT, I need a hiatus to recharge my batteries and come back fresh and ready to create some great stuff with DT..." He mentioned writing/recording/touring schedule for 20 yrs straight......."so I need a long break..."
But...I think even if the rest of the band said "ok lets take the next 18 months off..." MP would have still been making music, recording, touring with the side groups...right?
So where does the "recharge the batteries" come into play?? I think the conversations within the group probably circled around that...
|
After two decades with no real break there's definitely a need for a hiatus to get the creative juices flowing again. Plenty of long time fans feel like the band has simply been going through the motions for quite some time now. Working with people creatively is like being married to them, after a while (a lot less than 25 years in most cases) you know all their ticks and tricks and eventually you're bound to hit a wall. Working with new musicians is refreshing because you can draw new inspirations and see things from a different perspective than you normally would. Sure, the rest of the band is looking out for themselves, but they're certainly not looking out for what's best for the band from an artistic standpoint. |
I agree with you 100%...I really was not stating anything, more of like a question now that this has boiled for 2 days.
I think maybe there is some immaturity playing on both sides of this table.......I mean what seems to have been such a quick decision........"okay no hiatus...I quit then!"
Oh well...Im kinda now like who cares lets get on with it....I mean how many bands have the maturity level to stay together for over 25 yrs and continue having a great time on the road and in the studio making some pretty damn good music....
heh, heh...I know of one

I just want to know who the new drummer is going to be. There a few who would be great replacements, like Gavin Harrison (although there is a wee bit of a style change, it would be cool), Virgil Donati, Jason Rullo (symphony x) and some others.

^ Personally, I don't think another metal-oriented drummer would be the best fit right now. The band's music has disappointed a lot of fans because the metal stuff has become so suffocating. So the Symphony X guy wouldn't be my first choice. I would agree with you on Gavin, but I guarantee you he won't be joining. As far as I know, the only member of PT who actually likes DT's music is Steve Wilson.
A jazz drummer would be my pick, but I'm being biased since I've been getting so heavily into Jazz and Jazz-Rock lately.

As far as I know, SW hates DT music, but he is a very good friend of Mike and Jordan, he has stated it several times (and even the official Biography of DT). For me Gavin is smart enough to decline that offer. He would be killed by the metal fans and he doesn't has the taste of DT, he is more contemplative, more jazzy, I don't see him playing The Mirror or a Nightmare to Remember... just, no...!!!
Before we became to speculate, there are not many drummers who would like to take Portnoy shoes, most of the drummers by now already know the "tough audience" of DT. All is over analyzed and I don't see famous drummers willing to be bashed because "they don't play like Mike".
Virgil Donati seems to be in the same level, musically and he is insane, yeah...
Rod Morgenstein has already work with Jordan and John Myung, besides those, I don't see anyone willing to do it...

Yeah, it would be very, very interesting to have a jazz-inclined drummer, though I doubt it would be the Dream Theater that their fans will be fond of. It would be like a Planet X or another Liquid Tension Experiment, but with a singer Okay, it's just a matter of time till James leaves, so the band will only be John, John and Jordan, Rudess will leave then, leaving only both John's, these two will hire a jazzy drummer and will hire again Derek Sherinian and will make the best freakin' instrumental jazz metal.

Well, I love those projects so it won't be bad...
But seriously... the only thing that James Labrie didn't stand in the band was Mike Portnoy... so I seriously doubt he would leave the band now that he has the chance to actually sing in his songs...!!! but it will be strange and tough to see the new drummer... I'm not really sure how that will end up... but fingers are crossed, I still believe we will have an 11th album...

If it turns out he left DT just to play for A7X full time, I'll be pretty upset.

Maybe he will be able to convert them to progressive emocore?

The first thing he will do is start singing (?) the lead vocals and then fire the lead singer. Then he will start promoting 3 hours of show and he will fill the time with 20 minutes of drum solos and Dream Theater covers... I think he will be right back in DT by next summer...

Either a rock drummer with a high jazz-oriented sensibility or a jazz-rock drummer with lots of prog-metal appeals: Virgil Donati, Terry Bozzio and Mike Zonder are the options I imagine from my seat of speculations.
Kind regards.
