Bad news but i'm not too fond in DT to be honest.

Serious throwback to DT fans.

But now people will be watching the 2011 album keenly to see if they pull this transition off.

Indeed it will. A lot of people (including myself) will certainly be on the lookout. I disagree with your statement about SC and BC&SL being skippable, however. I think they were strong releases, nothing over the top, but solid nonetheless.

I see Mike returning after DT's next album and (I assume) the supporting tour...similar (somewhat) to what happened with Jon Anderson with Yes.

It's probably been over a month since I've posted here, so I guess I'll say something now.

Although I was not blown away by the last bunch of DT album's, Portnoy's departure stunned me greatly.  I had a feeling there was bound to be a change in DT eventually, but Portnoy was not the one I expected to leave.  I guess I shouldn't be too surprised since he nearly left around the time of Falling Into Infinity, but the man I thought would leave would be the ever-quiet John Myung, possibly even James Labrie.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm not saying I'd want to see JM or JL go, but it's just a bit odd that the seemingly most controlling member of the band is the one that leaves it.

At the end of the day, I look forward to the aftermath of this decision.  Maybe this will give Dream Theater a chance to evaluate their recent efforts and somewhat revitalize them.  I'm not going to speculate why Mike left DT, but based on what he has said I understand his reasons.

Indeed, the band needed a break time. It would give them time and space to get some fresh air. But...

Well, waiting for next 'Transatlantics' projects :)

Sorry for the late response, but this has really crushed me. Being , admittedly, a Dream Theater fanboy, this is terrible news for me. I'm almost on the verge of tears.... Disapprove

Well, regardless what anyone says, I'm eager to see how his work with A7X goes. I personally thought City of Evil was an interesting album. And A7X isn't as terrible as some people make them out to be.

Yea pretty much like everyone else sitting on the sofa last night reading the notice on Dream Theater.net, shocker that Portnoy is leaving. But as I wondered about this, yea he is an amazing drummer, pretty much any drummer is the backbone of the band.......As I read the Facebook letter, it really smelled of "I need a break from DT...." Although that's not what he is saying, this does leave the door open for him to return to the band he formed in '85....But with soooo many sideprojects he may not have anytime if they go well.

I seriously doubt it has anything to do with money...DT made him more money than Hail!, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment combinded could pay him. Today artists make no money on album sales, they are lucky to cover costs of production...money is made on tours.

Anyhow.....I really enjoy listening to DT, they certainly do things that are amazing. Will be interesting to see how this all unfolds in the next 6 months.

As I said before, get a grip.

Some of us have lived through Gabriel leaving Genesis and Anderson/Wakeman leaving Yes. Now that's serious stuff.

Am I correct in assuming you're being sarcastic or not?

Losing Mike Portnoy is just as serious as losing Gabriel or Anderson. Dream Theater is one of the largest progressive acts around and they were still gaining an audience some how even after being around for 25 years.

Well for the 20 somethings and less (J-Man is teenager...) this IS their Genesis and Yes scenario.....let the boy grieve, he's a good kid.

Assuming you're not being sarcastic, this is close enough to the actual response I would give. Plus I'm in the group being described.

Prediction: They'll do one album without him and he'll return to the band recharged in 2012.

I have a feeling that Mike's not really leaving, and that he's bluffing to get the other DT fellows to agree to a hiatus. They could always do a King Crimson and break into fracDTals for a while...

Nope...no sarcasm at all, I meant every word of it. Music means a lot to people......When I was a teenager, hell it was all I did (no computers, video games were Pong, no cell phones, cable TV...) music was all we had to take up most of our freetime....of course when I was not playing baseball....My music Forum was buying all the music mags and reading them from cover to cover over and over.....that's where we got our news from.
This is big stuff for a lot of people......(zero sarcasm).

I am aloso on the verge of tears

It is the end of an era

I just can't imagine it : Dream theater touring with somebody else in the rear of the stage...

... and who could he be ? Who will be able to fit in Portnoy's shoes ?

Whoever it will be, he will have to convince a lot of anxious Dream Theater fans - and it won't be an easy task

I don't remember such a huge departure since Wakeman/Anderson from Yes in 1980 - and Yes had a hard way to survive back then -

Ultime tentative
