Fish-only snobs, please keep your comments to yourselves. This is for those of us who love the band, regardless of the singer.

These are the four highest-rated Hogarth-era Marillion platters. I agree with three of them. Wink Afraid Of Sunlight is great, but has never done it for me as a full-album listen the way the other three do. I personally would probably swap in Holidays or Happiness Is...

Either way, I like every Marillion album from their debut to Less=more. But from these four, I'd like to see your choices. (I don't recall seeing this one done any time recently, so apologies if anyone's sick of seeing it.)

My vote goes to Brave, which is my favourite Marillion album of all.

Genesis/Yes/Rush/Marillion/VDGG&PH/The Flower Kings/Zappa/Änglagård/Wobbler/PFM/Banco/Le Orme/Jethro Tull/Spock's Beard/Transatlantic/Ayreon/Beardfish/IQ/Dream Theater/Opeth/P.Tree/Arena/Camel/Kaipa!

It's Brave for me. One of my favorite's and just a really well done concept album.

Season's End comes in close second to Brave. I can't stand Afraid of Sunlight - after that one I didn't buy a single new Marillion album for 10 years...

Afraid of Sunlight is the album that made me quit with Marillion. Because of it I don't know Marbles.
The remaining two are different and both have good things. "Living with the big lie" is a great song, but I prefer Seasons End as a whole.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Afraid of Sunlight for me, a sublime album I never get tired of listening to. All very good albums, but I find Brave overrated:) Thanks Progatron for the "Fish-only snobs" comment!!! It's about time Hogarth is recognized by this site as the far superior singer!!
A GREAT YEAR FOR PROG!!!

From the list I only have Brave and Marbles... Brave is a 5-star album IMO, but Marbles still hasn't caught on. I won't vote, though, since I haven't heard the other two options.

Brave for me (I listened to it just yesterday and it's really great one), but Marbles are close and the two others are also very good. Hard choice but it has to be done :-)

Not my favourites by Marillion (yes, I'm rather Fish-only snobLOL), but I'll go with Seasons End and Brave.

Brave! One of my overall favourite Marillion-albums.
Holidays in Eden, not mentioned here, also has some strong moments.

All four VERY VERY close together, but if I were forced to choose it would be:
Marbles > Afraid of sunlight > Brave > Seasons End

Yes, all four are certainly good. I vote Marbles as my favourite, however overall I think Brave is the best work the band have done, but it falls down a bit sonically.

I can't choose from the list really; you've put there the 4 most appreciated and respected Hogarth era albums.

Hard poll, as I have always said that I can barely tear apart Brave & Marbles. both of these albums are, IMHO, incredible pieces of genius written by a great band at the peak of their powers. They are both very strong 5 star by PA ratings for me, but if I really had to choose, it would be Marbles, although I'd be hard pressed to say why to be honest. Probably because of the sheer strength & beauty of the bookends, Invisible Man & Neverland.

Afraid of Sunlight & Seasons End are also incredibly strong albums, and I would also refer fans or potential fans to classics such as This Strange Engine, which is an incredibly strong album on their indy label debut, and Radiation, which for some strange reason passes a lot of people by. The last "proper" studio album, Happiness is the Road also contains some extremely strong moments, especially the modern classic Real Tears For Sale.

We also, BTW, have a Marillion Round Table on Prog Bands, Artists, and Genres Appreciation.

I gave it some love in my initial post. WinkLOL I can do without  the title track and "No One Can" but otherwise that is a classic Marillion album, IMO.

If you do not have the Somewhere In London dvd, it is a must-have, and begins with a stunning version of "Splintering Heart".

@lazland: I'll check out that "Marillion Round Table" discussion, thanks! Smile
