I love everything, and I mean everything by maybe three bands:

Savatage (Even Fight for the Rock)
Tom Waits
The Seatbelts

Nobou Uematsu's soundtracks can sometimes be a little overbearing with their length, but I generally love most all of it.

Stravinsky was a very heavy influence on Yes music, and particularly Jon Anderson. His style of blending and overlaying different melodies that aren't neccesarily assonant is something that Yes music, although simpler and obviously in a different medium, would replicate. Also, the frequent key changes, use of "significant" themes (which reccur in different forms throughout a piece), and very polyrhythmic timings are also carried through in the music of Yes, particularly their longer and more weighty songs. The Gates of Delirium is one of the better examples of the Stravinsky influence.

Anderson wrote most of Gates alone at the piano, with help from the others only regarding things like instrumentation and dynamics (besides playing it). I'm not saying the two people are particularly similar, or that Jon had no originality (although he did steal the odd phrase!), just that there is a strong link between their compositional approach.

Stravinsky was of course, a neo-classical genius. I'm not saying Jon Anderson is this. But he is (in my opinion), the symphonic prog equivilant. I think the fact that he mostly just sings, is why people don't see this. Most of the great Yes epics began inside his head.

You make a strong point. I don´t know my way around chords and time signatures, I play the drums autodidact, but I always enjoy learning new thingsSmile , and I wouldn´t have made the connection myself...
Anyways - back on point: A band that can do no wrong for me is Supersister. 5 brilliant canterbury albums - and I don´t get why Spiral Staircase gets whipped.

Well, at least we have something in common. Tom is one of my heroes. Nighthawks At The Dineris one of my favourite albums of all time. I've seen him twice. Blew me away.

I don't think I can say this about any band/artist that has released more than 10 albums. There are always some songs I feel the need to skip in huge discographies.

I guess Devin Townsend and Steven Wilson are two musicians who almost fit the description for me. I love all their projects from all periods so yeah..

This is what I think the first two in the list did wrong.

I don't see anything wrong with Pink Floyd and I don't follow the last two bands so I can't say.

In terms of songs instead of albums, let me mention Remote Romance.
I really love Camel but that song is poorer than a filler. A shorter album would have been really better.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Good lord.  I'm one of the most forgiving listeners imaginable.  I don't skip tracks, and I'm an album addict...no playlists for me, please.  However, there are certain bands that just, in my humble opinion, don't record clunkers.  These include:

Pink Floyd
Spring
Queen
Jethro Tull (yes! even Under Wraps!)
T. Rex
Yezda Urfa
The Beatles
The Doors
Cressida

Of course, several of these artists hardly qualify as having a discography...also, essentially Nektar.  I love all their material, including the new 2000's albums, but for some reason Down to Earth puts me to sleep every time.

For me it's Godspeed I fully enjoy every single second from any single song and every single monologue, and I can say the same for any Godspeed's side project even for 1-speed bike.

I think we should realize that every band, in the course of their long or not-so-long careers, is bound to come up with a 'stinker' at a certain point. It happened to Yes, it happened to Genesis, it happened to Rush, all bands that I still love to death, but I can't possibly state that all of their work is up to the same incredible level as their best efforts. No way.

Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Anathema have managed to never disappoint me in any way - so far. I'm pretty sure that one day, however, they will...

Jesus never managed to figure out the theremin either

I think that it is fair to say that no band has ever done everything right. For example,

Floyd - Final cut, The Wall.....
Yes - Tormato.....
Crimson - Earthbound, Beat.......

I saw earlier a few who came close, so I guess the following

Yes - Up to and including Going for the one,
Moodies - 67-72......but not the cacky material with Moraz......

i dont think there is such thing as "Bands That Can Do No Wrong", band members are only human after all.
There are bands that do good for longer periods tho,

There's surely a long list... but well it's easier to do no wrong ...when you just do 3 albums... it's much more difficult when you cross decades with many albums in each decades...i mean the 80s were not that good for most bands...so in theory it's easier to split your band  for exemple in 1981 and just reform 10-12 years later...
There's the Moody Blues 7 first albums (7th Sky !)  why not...but there's many more...

It's not very original to say Led Zepellin...but it's quite true...the problem it's their last official one "In through the out door" (1979) ...who is really really far of bein' one of the best album of 1979(and there's a lot of people with this opinion) ...in 10 years time ...it will surely not be in my top 50 records of 1979...

Even Camel record of that year (not their best) is far better...and even Bryan Adams ...no hehe i was jokin' there...LOL... uhmmm no seriously...basically it was a joke but now i realize...really i've got to check Adams '79 lp... it's not impossible to be less bad than the Zep one... who knows...Ouch... and even Aerosmith over-druggy-not-that-good 79 lp  beat  the  fat gaz balloon...but who threw the matchstick ?
