I don't know if I should say thanks or not.

The only reason that I have so many counts is that I'm always listening to my iPod or iTunes so everything I listen to is scrobbled.  I just did this on the 'how much music do you listen to a day' poll but I have my iPod going eleven hours a day, every week day.  Two hours of commuting, nine hours at work.  In addition, there's at least an hour every night usually two to three.  I've had my LastFM account for the better part of two years now so yeah, there's a lot of scrobbles on there.

I just always have something on as background music, it adds up.

Just a question, you use headphones, don't you? After listening to so much music through them don't your ears "hurt", don't you hear the 'bzzzz'? Or are you someone that puts a reasonable volume on the iPod?

I'm just saying because I unfortunately am very frightened with the use of headphones. I listened to two years or so, and now one of my ears "buzz's" and that's like an ear-deafening syntom or something. I rarely listen to music with my MP3 now. Mind you, I don't want to scare you or anything, just curious about your experience with the iPod.

^ Pablo,

No, I've got a way to hook my iPod up to my car stereo system, my computer at work, and two separate stereo systems at home.  The only time that I typically use headphones is for about the last half hour each night and even then, it's not ear buds and at a reasonable level.

I agree, earbuds scare me, it's too easy to damage your hearing.  You sound like you're a lot more careful about it these days.  You're still young enough that any damage can heal.

I take it on a day by day basis, usually based on the question "What do I feel like listening to today?"

It's really easier than to plan ahead.  Granted, much to my wife's chagrin, I use the same 'fly by the seat of my pants' method of choosing my clothes for the work day.  I think I make too much noise picking clothes out in the morning for her tastes.

So I'm in a relatively crappy mood, our department is under a lot of stress and people are cracking left and right.  I combat this with The Flower Kings, their music is generally uplifting and happy.  So here's what I'm listening to:

Flower Power
Paradox Hotel
The Sum of No Evil
Retropolis
Back in the World of Adventures
Space Revolver

Someone was questioning earlier how I get so many scrobbles, there is an additional 87 Flower King songs.  Add that to the 5 Flower Kings songs that I listened to on the way in and an hour's worth on the way home and you get to one hundred scrobbles in a day as relatively easy.  This includes sixteen songs that are in excess of ten minutes.  I'm just sayin that my number of scrobbles really isn't that amazing when it's al taken into account.  I just listen to a lot of music.  Smile

Certainly thanks. I meant is as a friendly poking. Unfortunately, I can't do the same thing when studying (of course hard) university, because I can't listen two things at once. You have it better, you can work and listen something else. It will probably even help you to work better :-D

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

hmm, I may have to give "I Am" another listen.  When I first heard it, I thought it was ok, but nothing spectacular.  At the time, e-music offered you the opportunity to buy like one hundred songs for ten bucks or something.  There wasn't any regulation on song length at the time so quite a few of the things that I bought were based on "how many tracks were on the album".  I own "I Am" and "Slow Dance" by Anthony Phillips mostly because they were full length albums that had three and two songs respectively.

Yes, I like I AM better than Paradox Hotel.  Paradox IS a great album, though like you I'm not a fan of Monsters and Men so much (it's not bad, but one of their weaker epics to my ears).  I AM just seemed to have so much of what I was missing with the FK's in Paradox and A&E.  Plus, the lyrics really hit home with me on a personal level.  I really don't expect everyone to love it as much as I do, but I think if people give it more time, they will at least hear how great of a symphonic prog fest it really is.

Having said all that, I don't think I'd rank it above Unfold, Retropolis, Stardust, or Flower Power.  It's not quite THAT good Big smile

No worries, I just heard the same thing from a few different sources at the same time.

I don't know if it's lucky or not, I found at an early age that I was very scatter brained.  My mind really tended to wander which made it difficult to focus on things, homework in particular was difficult.  I found that music was the perfect thing to occupy the part of my brain that tended to wander allowing me to focus the rest of my energy on the task at hand.  These days I work in a cube farm and music is the only thing that keeps my mind from going off track every time someone in the next cube has a conversation with someone else.

*phew* hehe, I thought you were bombarding your ears with hours and hours of The Flower Kings at volume 11 haha Wink

Good to know that it didn't turn to be like that, and yes, I am more careful these days, though got to admit that I do listen to very loud music in my room but I don't think it can compare to the loud volume from ear dubs, I fear that a lot of kids of this generation will have lots of future ear problems.

I've been on a bit of a resurgence myself Pablo. I was listening to "Unfold the Future" last night / this morning and realized how much I enjoy disk 2.  I think that most prefer the first disk, but for me, the run of songs from "Grand Old World" all the way to the end is great.  I've always loved "Grand Old World" and the others are just a nice batch of relaxed tunes.  Good stuff.

You guys got me listening to Space Revolver now, darn it !  Big smile

Still, I think possibly one of the best Flower Kings albums for a newbie to start with, since it has everything great about the Flower Kings, without being overly dense (Unfold) or uncompromising (Flower Power, Stardust........and unlike those two it's a single album, easier to digest).  It also represents their sound across the years better than something like Paradox Hotel or Adam&Eve.  Anyway, great album.

I've always like disc 2 of UTF more than disc 1.  I greatly prefer "Devil's Playground" over "The Truth...," and there rest of disc 2 is really good and flows very well.  Meanwhile, disc 1 has several songs I can do without in "Vox Humana" and "Christianopel."  If I had to list my 10 favorite songs from the two discs combined, only two songs from disc 1 would make it...maybe three.

^^ Gus, I agree wholeheartedly about that.  Space Revolver is a great place to start.

^ Biff.  I vary on which of the two epics I prefer, today I actually prefer "The Truth. . . " though it had been "The Devil's Playground" for the majority of the time.  Other than that though, I really like the laid back almost jazzy feel to disc 2.  I mentioned "Grand Old World" before, but another favorite is "The Devil's Danceschool".

I've been enjoying a lot 'Snow' lately, I only used to pick up 'The Light' by the Beard.

I also have 'V' and their s/t, though they have good stuff they don't thrill me. I'm thinking of getting either Octane or Feel Euphoria, I know they're the lowest rated albums by them, but I sense these might appeal to me more than the Morse albums with the exception of 'The Light' and 'Snow'.

Any recommendations?

No, I've not been away lately.  The trip to Vegas is at the start of October, which I think is just about the best time to visit.  Not as hot as the middle of summer but still nice and sunny, I hope.

Pablo, of those two SB albums I have Feel Euphoria and that's pretty good.  The "Sid" epic is great and the rest of the album is enjoyable too.  That said I prefer all the SB albums with Neal Morse to that one Embarrassed.  FE is well worth getting especially if you find a good deal as I think amazon sell it cheaply Wink.

Pablo,

Both have their good points and their low points, though in my mind, they're both better than the self-titled.

If I can make a suggestion, try "X".  It should be released through normal distribution channels by the end of August if I understand correctly and in my mind, is far superior to the two that you mentioned and in fact is better (in my mind) than all of the Neal Morse CD's with the exception of "Snow".

If you want to keep the recommendation between the two that you mentioned, I'd go with "Feel Euphoria".  As Roj mentioned, the Sid epic is great.  I personally like "Feel Euphoria" as well.
