If I play The Flower Kings nowadays, I'll play one of their early albums to see if my opinion changes or I just play my favorites: Space Revolver, Unfold the Future (disc 1) and Adam & Eve.

I don't play TFK albums as much as I used to but that's only because I know 'em so well.  If I had a Last FM account they'd be absolutely miles ahead at the top LOL.  The positive news is I've not "gone off" any of their albums, so they're standing the test of time, so far at least.

Still I listen to 'em fairly frequently.  The full Flower Power (both discs) got an airing last week and only last night I listened to Stardust We Are disc 2.

Anyway, it's my birthday coming up soon and I've been asked to compile a "wish list".  It's already quite a long list.......

I'm really getting into The Flower Kings now. Discovered them through Transatlantic. I'm listening to Stardust We Are on a music streaming site, but I definitely plan to buy something of theirs eventually. Loving the organ work on this album, especially on Church of Your Heart.

Get "The Flower King". A lot of people overlook it. It's astonishing. The first album before they were officially "the flower kings" Rarely ever heard such an amazing first album from anyone.

Roine is such an incredible producer. Even a low bitrate mp3 sounds incredible with the right pair of headphones. So many hidden layers and little nuiances everywhere. There's something new to discover on every listen it seems. I really need to rebuy Unfold the Future so I can rip it in FLAC.

Jees guys, I'm a little late for my contribution to "my history on TFK" (page 100). I have hardly some spare time to review albums let alone visiting the forum last few months. Sorry for that but I still love my fav band to death of course.
My first encounter was a blind guess in 1998 by buying Flower Power. I remember the music was a bit too much for me then. I was already into prog for a decade or so but mainly neo prog and then TFK is quite complex music. Especially Garden of Dreams was way too much to take in for me back then. But in 2006 I listened to a few stream tracks on PA (There is more to this World, In the Eyes of the World and Big Puzzle) and was grabbed big time by them. I couldn't hold back anymore, bought all their albums in very short period of time and loved all of them almost equally. As we probably all know by now I mainly love their epics but also some mid length stuff is absolutely terrific. Still the best band ever to me !!
Needless to say also I am anxiously hoping for a new album. Agents of Mercy will have to do very well to get me interested in them again because I was pretty disappointed by the debut.
A day without prog is a wasted day

I loved TFK from the word go and live they are amazing. For some reason tho', I thought Garden of Dreams just didn't hang together. I liked 90% of everything they did. Not that one. Then one day, I put it on again and it had gotten better. Ha ha! Bloody marvelous piece. My head just needed time. Weird!
I'm lucky to live near Uppsala in Sweden, so I get to the local gig they do occasionally. One time, Roines brother got on stage and they became the old version of themselves. That's my favourite way to see a band. Same with POS, free gig in a local square with only 100 people watching(happens alot). Unbelievable!

Just to let you guys know, an album by a side project of a Flower Kings member is coming out at the end of the month.

The band is called "Hasse Froberg and The Musical Companion" and the album is titled "Future Past".

It appears that the album is being released on the 27th of August.

Their myspace page has all the information and a cool little clip from the album that sounds really good! Here is the link: http://www.myspace.com/hassefrobergandthemusicalcompanion

Thanks Nate.  I'm hoping that they're going to do a festival over here in the states or something.  Hasse posted on his Facebook page that the Musical Companion were rehearsing Flower Kings songs the other day.  If memory serves me he was saying ... nevermind, I'll just post the quote:

Hasse Fröberg and the Musical Companion Last night we started to work, with some of the Flower Kings tunes I
plan to play live. The fire and the devotion the guys put in was just
tremendous!//Hasse :)

Incidentally, I was listing to "Their Names Escape Me" the other day.  It was totally cool to pick your name out of the line up.

Also, props to Shawn Bishop who runs "The Dividing Line Broadcasting Network" and was also among the contributors to the song.  He has done a lot for modern progressive music.  When we were allowed to stream music at work (not that I'm bitter) I listened to his station all the time.  If you're ever looking for a good progressive rock station, The Dividing Line Broadcasting Network is what you should search for.  I don't think I'd have ever given Neal Morse' solo work a fair shot if I hadn't heard some of it on Shawn's station.  [/ADVERTISEMENT]

So I reconnected with The Flower Kings this weekend.  I had a lot of 'work around the house' projects so I pretty much just attached my iPod to the stereo and hit shuffle on Saturday.  This sent a lot of Flower Kings  over the airwaves, "The Truth Will Set You Free", "Serious Dreamers" and "City of Angels" all made an appearance on Saturday.  On Sunday, I just put the iPod on random Flower Kings and pretty much was accompanied by Roine and company all day long.

Some how the tedious amount of housework got a little better.

Aargh!!! Don't use the ipod word here!! Steven Wilson would be very angry and maybe Roine would be disappointed in you too. Put the record on.

Well, I happen to know Tom has purchased all TFK albums, so I don't think Roine has any objections there.  I've read Wilson's feelings (and others) about how MP3's degrade the sound of recordings, but I think a lot of people can't really hear the difference.  I usually can, more or less, but if I'm going for a walk outdoors, I put on my headphones and MP3 player to listen to my favorite stuff.  Honestly, as long as you payed for their music, I don't think Roine or Wilson would have a problem with you listening to it in whatever format you wish (and Wilson would prefer you listen to vinyl LP's anyway, which is simply not possible with TFK's).

But I usually prefer to hear CD's through a half decent stereo than MP3's through anything.  However, the shuffle capability is very nice to have sometimes.

I know.. In fact you can download Porcupine mp3s on Amazon anyway. He refers to the way people use the low quality ones and cram them onto ipods etc. Tough for somebody like Wilson who is ALL about quality. I actually listen to the 5.1 albums he produces as often as possible. The work that goes into getting that little extra quality on the master is huge compared to the difference it actually makes to the sound to most people. Floyd did it a long time ago. Quad album but nobody could hear it due to lack of equipment to play it on, in the 70s. Ha ha! I had some and did hear it.

^^ Thanks for having my back there Gus Smile

Regarding odinal's post, I like to think of myself as a CD collector.  I buy a CD and immediately rip high quality MP3's from the CD and give the sleeve a careful examination before gently placing it back into the case.  What this means is that I never have to worry about my CD's scratching, I never have to worry about leaving one in the sun and having it warp, the booklet remains in pristine condition and I get to listen to the music where ever I want.

Yes, I understand that there is a sound quality loss in an MP3, the fact is that at age 38, natural aging has caused me to loose many of those frequencies in the first place.  Besides, half of the time I'm listening to music in the car, at work or working around the house, all of which are places that I wouldn't be able to appreciate the high quality in the first place.

If, however, I am sitting around my house and the wife and child have gone out for the night, I'll break the actual CD's out.

Being as that happens about once a year, I have the option to either listen to music once a year in a pristine setting or to enjoy music in a less than ideal setting all year round.  Since I've chosen the second option, I will also take the convenience of the iPod.

^^  I can relate Tom Unhappy

Still, I manage to listen to CD's most of the time.  But my son doesn't live with me full time and my girlfriend enjoys (or at least can tolerate) most of my prog albums.  I admittedly do have a large number of albums only (about 60 or so) in MP3 format that I acquired in a not-so-legal manner Embarrassed.  This was a number of years ago, and most of the albums were not available on CD at the time (or in any format......some still are not available to this day).  Quite a few I have also picked up the CD since then (or at least bought other albums by the same band).  And some I didn't much like, but have kept in case I change my mind some day.  The whole batch of them came from one person, who actually had paid for them all, and they were only shared with me and perhaps one or two other people (I know this because I got them from him via a secure FTP site that he sent me a user name and password for).  I actually could have gotten quite a bit more stuff from him, but decided that it wasn't how I wanted to get music.

I love booklets and artwork, leafing through while the album plays and thinking about how the artist intended it all to link together..........lyrically, audibly, and visually.  This just isn't possible with MP3 only albums (though I suppose you can get the cover and booklet in electronic format and see it that way, it's just not the same as holding it in your hands).

As an aside, one of the albums that I have only in MP3 format is Porcupine Tree's Recordings album, which will soon be available again for the first time in almost 10 years (it was a limited edition of "outtakes" from the Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream sessions, but to my ears is better than both those albums combined.........at the time it came out I had only heard one album of theirs and did not much care for what I heard live at Nearfest 2001, where they had Recordings on sale).  I will be picking that one up for sure when it comes out, because I would love to finally have it on CD.

Wink Ha ha! It's turned into a Porcupine mp3 tree thread thing.
I am the guy that discovered all these bands that no friend had ever heard of(or could be bothered to hear of), therefore was the only one who actually owned all the albums, including "recordings" and gave copies (not mp3s) to friends, in order for them to discover what was going on in the music world these days. I'll bet there are a few of  you out there that recognise that situation? Plenty of you must be "that guy". All your mates gave up "listening" to music 20 years ago but will pay to go and see reformed Genesis, Zep or Yes because there will be nothing as good ever again. Lol!! You try to tell them there is life out there and they switch on "Planet Rock" and ignore you.
It took years of me buying cd's of everything from Spocks Beard to Pain of Salvation and playing them to people before they finally gave in and started buying their own ones. 50 year olds are hard to retrain eh? Um... except me that is!
On mp3s... why not? Anything goes! I just like to sit and listen to full quality 5.1 "The incident" or "Trick of the tail" etc as often as poss. I want all the Flower Kings albums in 5.1, 13.1 or better.
So here we are back to the Flower Kings. I like 'em!!!
Colin
