It's enjoyable in small doses, but I will agree that
Grunge is the fail punk

They have already corrected the poster, no need to remind him again and in such a cold way.

Missed that, and I didn't think I was being cold.

If you know that he's a new guy, you can tell him where the correct section is, and since you're here, you can add something to the purpose of the poll...

You are wise beyond your years.

My vote goes for Alice in Chains.  The vocal harmonies that Staley and Cantrell were able to pull off put them heads and tails above the other grunge bands in my opinion.

lol @ the guy who started this whole Tool is grunge thing. Opiate and Undertow can simply be considered hard rock or heavy metal. There's also an apparent sludge influence on those two records.

My vote goes to AiC. I know they were dissatisfied with being labeled as grudge, and forced to wear flannel by the record company. It's true that the music is very much hard rock or heavy metal, but I still consider them in essence a grudge band especially as far as vocals and lyrics go.

I don't hear it. Well, at least not in either Themata or Sound Awake.

The best answer I know of is Mother Love Bone. Then it's Soundgarden.

I consider Alice in Chains to be a more alternative-metal band but still in the "grunge" scene. I would vote for them.

Tool's early albums are close to grunge as well but I very much prefer their later stuff.

As for the most prog "gurnge-influenced" band, that might be Karnivool...

Never cared much for any grunge but my kids did for awhile. I do like Soundgarden though.

I agree. Undertow was a great grunge album and very proggy.
But since its not an option I'll go with soundgarden, I mean they have a song with someone playing the spoons. Whats not prog about that? LOL

Plus they played in 7 a lot.  Definitely a prog affectation.

Definitely Alice in Chains is the proggiest grunge band.

The blending of hard and soft music, all the work with acoustic guitars...
They're probably my favorite non-prog band too.

I guess Alice in Chains can fall under grunge.

But gunna go classic.

I used to be into Grunge, but I haven't listened to the genre in a few years... I would pick Pearl Jam, though.  Nirvana should never be picked for anything ever, except maybe the most overrated band of all time.

Queensryche are from Seattle ergo they are grunge Ermm eh NO.

my favouritte are Soundgarden, the most obscure of the big four and most experimental and most technical and complex and were also one of the founders of grunge (together with Green River, Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone) they also in the meantime lead down the foundation for Stooner metal (which were made into a genere by Kyuss) they are also said to be the first Alternative metal band.

Badmotorfinger and Superunkown are both technical onslought of fearouchious metal with a punky attitude and psychadelic  undertones.

Ermmm.
Grunge is a genres made by a bunch of playboys that wanted to be punk. But they didn't know nothing about anarchy and rebelion, so they just play punk's easy riffs with sort of melancholy (just to make something "new"). In the end, they are still a bunch of playboys

To me they are a Sludge Metal band. But you know, they come from Seattle and reached their peak of popularity in the 90's, so, as many other Seattle bands they were labelled grunge. Plus, they were a big influence for some Grunge bands sound (for example, Nirvana's debut Bleach).

Well, the right question should be: "Is there such a thing as "grunge rock"?"
I vaguely remember some interviews by Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder and many others saying: "No". Some even add: "that's bullsh*t from a bunch of a****le musical journalists who don't know f**king sh*t about rock".

More or less.

After all, I also remember some critics adding L7 or Sonic Youth to the Grunge train...

These are all Melvins tracks. Just look at the duration of the songs. I stand by my vote. The most Prog Related grunge band are absolutely The Melvins. Not a traditional Prog act, but surely the most experimental of the grunge ones.

This. Tool was considered part of the Grunge circuit for several years when they still had that 'raw' sound to their productions. They shared fans with Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Rage Against The Machine, and I believe were friends with folks in those bands, also.

I don't consider Tool 'grunge' myself, but there you go.
Yeah, Adam Jones (Tool) is pretty good friends with Tom Morello (RAtM).  I believe they were in a band together long ago, called the Electric Sheep, I believe.
