Crime was my first album bought with my hard-earned cash as a newspaperboy and seduced me with that concept that seemed to be written prcisely for me.
Brought some pop into prog, but they were the epitome of an art rock (US sense, which meant prog rock) band with Argent

what about the incredible underrated song Wating So Long from Famous Last Words, such a hidden em, great arrangment, agressive, heavy guitar, Morricone escue, tango rythem, leyers upon leyers, and epic segment with Roger Hodgsons greatest guitar solo moment (epic)

Well if you saw from my list, I selected nopne from FLW, and there is a perfect reason for it:: I don't like it at all; only two tracks are acceptable (IMHO), and they're the last two: Waiting So Long and Don't Leave Me Now

Crime of the Century is one of my very favorite albums.

Yup it's good too. so are From Now On and Loverboy on that Moments album >>> Actually thinking about it Moments is quite a Davies album.
But....
For me Asylum and Rudy are better and a good deal of Brother top that track too

my topp 5 song are as follows
1. Crime of the Century
2. Soapbox Opera
3. From Now On
4. the Shadow Song
5. Surely part 2
5 things I like about them
1. their sence of writing melodies
2. their abilaty to be both simplistic but if they wanted they were abel to be dramatic and grandious, yet also make ethereal qualities
3. diversity in mood between songs, eclectisisme, their combination of jazz, folk, blues, beatelesque, symphonic elements during the scope of an album
4. by being more then addaptive to utilise, and experiments with dynamic within sound and to fully take advantedge of climaxes during their songarrangement
5. unorthodox song structures, lyrics are often storyline, albums could be operas and be set on stage
whats ther importance in music and art rock, well thei are one of the orginaters of Crossover prog, thei were partly in the shapings and wrote some of the "rules" for accesable prog (together with the Moodys and the Harums)

Ok, 5 things for both of your questions: 1. The debut album reminds me a lot of King Crimson  . 2. In the classic line up 1974-83 all musicians were technically perfect, no weak points. 3. In my favourite era 1974-79 all songs are very densely composed down to the last detail. Not only referring to dynamic and rhythmic change and construction, but also every single note/sound of every instrument seems to be important and fitting into the composition, no superfluous jamming around. 4. Genuine mixture of classic, rock, pop, jazz and blues. (4a. After Colosseum and Van der Graaf Generator Supertramp finally established saxophone in rock music.) 5. The live recordings of that time proved, that they were capable to play their songs on stage as perfectly as on their studio albums. (Some call it lack of improvisation, I call it perfection.)

3.- Contribution to Prog: I honestly don't believe they made great contributions to Prog, simply because they never were Prog (IMO of course), except making more popular the genre, being that many people see them as Prog.
