Not necessarily, see, we're debating this rationally on a public forum, while in Saudi Arabia we'd both be sent to rot in jail for our lack of belief in whatever they nominate as Muslim values ![]() |

I actually have somewhat mixed feelings about the ban, although I obvious lean toward calling it a bad idea. I just think it's careless to come in ranting about how the burqa is a sign of male oppression, despite how from the sources I've posted, not all Muslim women feel that way...so I would think it's (ironically) a bit chauvinistic for a bunch of (Westernized) men to come into this discussion deciding what is oppressing women and what isn't, rather than letting the women speak for themselves about the garment, but maybe that's just me. |

Reading up on this, to be fair, it looks like they will pass a "partial" ban which would allow women to wear it on the street, but not in hospitals, schools, or when trying to receive public services.
Posted in the interest of being accurate. I will say, again, that I think there are plenty of instances where the women should be required to show their face in the interest of security or other common sense things like getting a picture taken for an identity card. Also interestingly, the estimates are this effects perhaps a couple thousand women. There are an estimated 3.5 million Muslims living in France.

Again, no. I'm defending the right of people to wear anything they chose. You're trying to make this issue about the garment being forced on the wearers. a. That is not always true, b. Regardless its about the right in the abstract irregardless of whom i'm supposedly defending it for.

I've changed my mind, I think the clothes of Muslim women suit them just fine and are an expression of their liberty to wear anything they want.

Sorry but Burqas need to be banned, hopefully other nations will follow suit. Looking at Dubai and commercialism hitting the muslim areas be it westernized or M.East areas, it is time to get WISE for that religion and move with the times. If one suicide bomber is disguised then the method needs to be removed. Wear the burqa as much as they want at their home or in their place of worship. Good one France

Exactly, who is to say that? And who is to say the opposite? Have they asked Islamic women how they want to be dressed? I think this law of France is absolutely abhorrent, and Jean and I took part in a demonstration for freedom in which we dressed as Islamic women, veiled head to toe and carrying signs saying "Take your hands off my burka". No, the decision of a person how he or she wants to dress must remain his or her own, and no state has to interfere there. It is in this context fairly significant that of all German parties the Green party, the party which DEFINITELY is the party that takes care of equal rights for women the most (no other party has such a high percentage of women at the top, for example) protested against this law the most. We should ban trees too because one time a suicide bomber hid behind one.
