Had a quick look for the following in the listings for the top PR bands  but as of yet I can find no mention of the following:-

Rare Bird,
Man,
Camel,
Renaissance,
Barclay James Harvest,
Greenslade.

Surprisingly, I  see heavy metal and other genres mentioned and so if we're going to bend the rules of classification this much then how about adding Fairport Convention, Blodwyn Pig and Colosseum, to name but a few who are much closer to the vein of PR.

Moreover, if the list includes bands from the other side of the Atlantic such as Santana and Hendrix then clearly Jefferson Airplane, It's A Beautiful Day, and Quicksilver Messenger Service - the list is endless - must also appear.

Finally what about the European bands such as Amon Duul and Kraftwerk to name just two, extremely influential, bands that are also omitted.

I'm not trying to be provocative just informative as I feel I owe this to the memory of the musicians who blessed my life with such joy. I really enjoyed browsing this site and checking out the contributor's views.
Peace

I think you'll find pretty much all of them are here, just not in PR. Camel (and Greenslade, I think) are in Symphonic, as are Renaissance. Colosseum are in Jazz/rock. Amon Duul II is in Kraut Rock. Recommend using site's search function to check them out.

I'm referring to the thread;-

Topic: The Ultimate PA Album List - RESULTS!!!! and not to the site in general.  Sorry about not labeling this more clearly.

This list does not include the ones mentioned but does include Rage against the Machine and others which are by no means PR

This is a main thread that all newcomers see on visiting this site.

This list was created from lists provided by forum users choosing their favorite bands and artists.  The bands that you mentioned probably weren't included because they weren't amongst the favorites of the forum members who participated in the thread.

Thanks for the enlightenment. I see now that the thread uses PA and not PR. in it's title.

They are listed ... just in different places. The term progressive is way too generic and the sub-genre tends to tie these groups up in places they should not be. I don't listen to any of them because of their classification, and if you do, I seriously doubt your love for music, period!

I'm one of the few that tends to talk a lot about the West Coast thing. Being in Santa Barbara the whole 70's and some of the 80's, and driving almost every other weekend to LA to catch a lot of music ... helped a lot. I really thought it deserves a bigger ear, but it is my contention that too much of the "prog" definition centers around London and that takes away from what some folks did here which many times is way more progressive and experimental, albeit it could be said that it had a few less influence in classical music than it did jazz and rock found in the bars and clubs. And some of it was good and some not as good.

The difference?

America did not develop a respect for the music or the arts. America is about money and many of those folks never really did as well as they should have or could. And the California music scene got raped until it bled of aids! It was one of the saddest things you ever saw! And even with Rolling Stone, there is not enough care, respect and appreciation for much of anything except Gonzo (now anyways, but then he was a freak!) and the Grateful Dead, which also got massively trashed in their early days for their jams that could go on all night!
I still stick with the music a lot more than I do definitions. They tend to blur things and hide things.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
