Topic: A Tribute To Genesis and Three 12 String Guitars Posted: May 31 2010 at 14:40 |
Genesis 3 Guitar Part acoustic song Stagnation, The Musical Box, Supper's Ready, The Cinema Show, Entangled and Ripples... too name efew use Genesis's completely unique technique of using three acoustic guitars in harmony creating some of the most beautiful sounds of 70's prog. One of the highlights of any Genesis show then or now is the moment when Tony Banks backs away from his Hammond Organ for a second and picks up his 12 String Acoustic Guitar. Entangled is one of the prettiest prog Ballads out there with its soft acoustic sound occasionally interupted by a beautiful organ chord towards the end of the song and Phil Collins great lyrics . The Musical Box and Supper's Ready are the most famous examples but Stagnation and White mountain also deserve mention as 2 of the classic songs from Trespass or indeed all of the early genesis albums.

Agree. And the nice thing is that the arragements between the guitars were really good. I have seen so many times bands with 2 guitar players in which in similar situations (obviously not in the typical rythm guitar + lead guitar sections) both guitarists simply play basically the same on the 2 guitars (maybe using different finger forms in a different fretboard position, giving accent on different strings etc, but basically the same chords on the 2 guitars), while Genesis really constructed beautiful ensembles of 3 different guitar parts.

One thing I've always loved about Genesis is they work together as musicians unlike Yes who in such pieces as Close to the Edge they tend to play as individuals and it becomes a bit overwhelming but when Tony Banks goes mental rather than going "oh yeah look at this then" Steve Hackett chills out, and sometimes even stops playing.

At that time, the three 12 string guitars was quite innovative, and made genesis quite distinct from other bands, adding to the greatness of their music.
