Thanks for reporting that Rune.  It's never a good idea to write a "retaliatory" review.

I read your review as I wrote mine (and I looked at the 7 other five star reviews, or whatever it was), and I keep asking myself as I listened, "What in the world are these guys hearing that I'm not?"

But it still sounds awful to me.  No, I have not listened to it 30+ times as our reviewer would implicitly require of us.  LOL

And the funny thing is, I actually like several avant-prog albums, but I do not care for this one, no.

Who was it ? Who is this rating manipulator ?

"Torque sign" was the name, but Easy Money said this was a person with five user names.

This member hasn't posted a review since December last year so I wasn't familiar with them. I initially thought this Black Sabbath review was going to be based on a mathematical formula, but all is revealed later in the review. It's a tad vulgar, but actually quite funny. I enjoyed the quote about the grandmother's bathroom in particular. Some of Alitare's other 1-star reviews are entertaining as well. After a string of great albums, I gave up on Sabbath with the disappointing (for me) Sabotage. I don't know the album in the review, but judging from Sabotage, one star might be about right for this one:

Um... just picking up on the spate of 'ratings manipulation' reports here... I don't really think it's all that wrong, given the ratings system is mostly subjective anyway, and also, where do you draw the line? If someone wavers down on a half-star rating because an album is well-rated or wavers up because it's low-rated, is that ratings manipulation?

While I don't really do it, and I think it's a bit disingenuous, I really don't think that someone who is at least trying to make a contribution deserves a ban threat for something so petty and (anyway) more or less unidentifiable unless self-declared.

^ wavering up or down half-a-star isn't in the same league as deliberately marking down 2 stars and admitting to doing it because the averge is "too high".

If someone thinks an album is worthy of 3 stars then that's what it deserves - marking it a 1-star is effectively saying to someone who gave it 5-stars "your opinion is worthless - I'm stealing 2 of your stars"
What?

I think that there couldn't be any written rules about this subject. I suppose it's about personal decision in each case, using heart with brain in cooperation. Half star isn't that bad. I rated very few albums with very low rating, but it was never because I would like to see them lower in charts.

I admit that I once felt this need, but I was beginner here. About in first month of reviewing I once wanted to do this, but never actually did it.

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

I admit I'm taking rather extreme vs. very minor examples here, but still, I think the ban's a bit much, given there is almost no act of personal vitriol or bad writing that can get you that here.

I don't know whether a ban is too strong or not - unfortunately that is the only retribution open to us when some one is deliberately trying to rigg the ratings.
What?

maybe a ratings war is in order, quid pro quo;  you intentionally lower my rating, I'll intentionally raise one of yours

I think that the overall rating of a record may influence the rating I would give within a narrow range and I feel free to do so when this happens.

For instance: Suppose that I would rate both Pawn Hearts (VdGG) and Suits (Fish) between 3.5 and 3.9 stars. In this case I would give Pawn Hearts a 3-star rating because I think it's a bit overrated and I would give Suits a 4-star rating because I think it's embarrassingly underrated.

However, when I would rate an album a full star more or less than it actually deserves, the review police has a good reason to turn out and arrest me.

Can someone give me a general impression they have of my reviews? I want to improve on some of the existing ones, and have a better quality on futre ones.

I agree with you Chris (from the Reporting thread....trying to be good by bringing it hereBig smile)

One star reviews are fine....but a reviewer should never give a one-star judgement after only one play.  A band deserves a little better than that after months of work.  Not to mention our readers.

Hey everyone. I've posted 13 reviews of mainly jazz fusion and canterbury on PA so far.  I'm admittedly a George Starostin/John Mcferrin review junkie so my reviews are very in-depth and lengthy. I also take their stance of reviewing the emotional resonance I get from each album I listen to rather than the musical complexities and such. (Frankly, I have no knowledge of musical theory)

Anyway, I would love to have my reviews critiqued and picked apart for the benefit of improving my writing style, which may or may not be good.
