My love of prog came about through 80s Genesis so I'm not denying that one! For months all I listened to was the entire Genesis back catalogue. And then I found King Crimson. It was another few months before I got to some of the even slightly less mainstream artists. I'd say that you know you're a prog newbie when you come to the PA forums and can only participate in about 2% of the discussions to sound as though you even have the faintest clue what you're talking about. I reckon I'm on about 4.6% at the moment. Still relatively a newbie.

When you think Phil Collins was the founder member of Genesis, and that Mama was their debut single.
You think Jethro Tull is the name of the lead singer, and not the name of the band.
You think musicanship is more important than songwriting.
You feel superior because you like bands no one has heard of, instead of feeling mildly dissapointed that you cant discuss music with most of your friends.

You think 'House Of The King' is by Jethro Tull
You wonder why you can't buy albums by The Enid on the high street
You didn't spend the early 1980s listening to 'Script For A Jesters Tear' repeatedly in the depths of despair thinking 'he's singing about ME!!'
[edit]
Just me, that last one then?

DSOTM, CTTE and SEBTP are masterpieces, being Oldie or Newbie doesn't change that. They are what they are. Amazing.

When the intention behind your posts on PA is to impress members with more stars (or fewer, for that matter), with how much you know while constantly referring to the same few bands, rather than either seeking greater understanding yourself, or helping someone else to do so.

When you don't want to share your mp3 headphones, saying to the one that he/she won't like (=get) the music.

Radiohead are VERY proggy. Not in the look-what-i-can-do way or so but in ambition and composition yes

what the f**k was that all about? pink floyd are one of the most succesful, influential and proggy prog bands ever. just because something sold well doesn't mean it is bad (or good though). name one band that represents prog CONSIDERABLY BETTER than pink floyd

QFT. Pink Floyd is good, don't get me wrong, but they aren't as truly progressive as King Crimson was and is.

I kind of thought he meant that in the sense that "The only mainstream prog band you're aware of is Pink Floyd"
