Scott, it looks it does not. My skills with computers are limited by what I actually use (I know a lot about Windows XP, Opera, Total Commander etc), but I think it's because I use Opera and this feature simply isn't working here. Some things aren't, I'll get used to it.

OK Iván, it's legit then. However I don't understand why he has done such a thing. He must have known what this will say about his character and intentions. Maybe I would like this album, maybe I would give it 4 stars, but what he has done quite puts me off from simply human behaviour point of view.

It reminds me leader of left wing (not far left communist, but just left) "socialists democrats" - Their leader stated that press is acting "against" him and his political party and so he imposed informational embargo from his side. No statements, no speeches. Two weeks before votes.

Sometimes, people acts blindly.

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

You know what Ivan, you ARE a snob - a real prog snob! And snobbery comes out of hectorism.
Why canīt you admit it??

Your words are often missguiding, you are missquoting, basically doing everything to put artists down because of the fact that "you know better". I didnīt review our album, I simply tossed in a few comments because I felt like it and in order to submit, I HAD to rate it . Albeit a clone thing -  we had fun and everything was done with "a glint in the eye". You donīt seem to realize this. One of your problems are that you reviewed this album on the grounds of what you wanted it to be (original), not for what it actually is. So just because we do a homage to Genesis in this particular way does that make the music any less good?
Of course we donīt think we rival the classic Genesis line up or even past that era - no one can do that.
Itīs only a pastiché made out of love and respect to the band, thatīs all.

"So the members of UNIFAUN have probably convinced themselves they are as good as Genesis, and their answer shows this, they believe that if they use the same instruments as in Foxtrot, the music is like the music in Foxtrot".

That is such nonsence itīs unbelievable, and just shows a great deal of contempt.
Snobbery, thatīs all there is. Did we EVER say this? Where??

"Or is it the case that Mr. Sylvan believes that the instrument make the music"

This statement actually tells more about you than it does me. Ignorant.

"The album is a bad copy of Genesis and only to be kind with a new artist I gave three stars to Unifaun when as a fact a cheap copy deserves 1 star."

Again, contempt and snobbery. You are just being plain mean. A bad copy really?
Then what is a good copy, could you show us that mr "know-it-all"?

"What...Does Mr Sylvan wants me to rate this cheap copy with 5 stars?"

No, I threw in a four star, remember? Tongue Seriously, I cannot nor will I rate my own album -
but I wish for people like you to go back to Kindergarten and play with your toys because what you
have said and done here is enough to make you look really immature adn immensly stupid.

And please, just leave me out of your archive in the future and no reviews. I donīt need you.

Nad

Ps. I left Unifaun last year and have moved on to work with Roine Stolt, who found me through the Unifaun myspace page....and now it seems Bonamici is trying to keep Unifaun alive by showing up at the Steve Hackett event in France this month. Good or bad?  Obviously he was invited.
Anyway, Steve does certainly not have a problem with Unifaun. Smile

Nad Sylvan please, behave reasonably. This is not going to help you in any way. I have your album, I haven't reviewed this album yet, but there is a chance that I can like it. And think about others who may feel the same way.

I'm just a young man trying not to insult others, but rather gain experience by talking to them, sharing my thoughts. This is why these forums were created.

Also think about his rating. 3 stars is perfect average, OK ? Good but not essential isn't bad.

But by offending and by behaving offended, you're not going to get any kind of support. If you want to discuss, then discuss, but please, in sake of keeping these forums,

don't make this into flame war.

Why? Because I believe UNIFAUN is a clone band?

As a fact I rated the band in the same level as Supper's Ready, because I hoped you could release something remotely original and to support a new band.

About the hectorism, the only bully is the one that qualifies a person as stupid because he doesn't do what you want

Lets put things in it's place:
  1.  I haven't quoted you a single time.
  2. I haven't mentioned at all the fact you rated your album with 4 stars
  3. I defended and will always defend my right to review an album and rate it as high or low as I believe.

Again, I don't know what you want or what you are reading, if I did something, it was defending your right to rate your album as high as you want:in the Collaboratot's section.

I don't wanted the album to be original, as a fact I don't expect anything in particular from the albums before I listen them, but I say what I think about the album, and I believe UNIFAUN is a clone of Genesis without any originality, which I rated with 3 stars out of 5 exclusively for the skills I heard from the performers.

The key word is PROBABLY, I never said you stated this, i'ts only a conclusion based in the fact that you complain about a three stars review when the same reviewer has rated Seconds Out with three stars...I can only think you believe you are at least in the same level if not better.

If I'm not wrong in your review you said that a determined song couldn't sound like taken from ABACAB because you used certain instruments not availlable when ABACAB was released...Isn't my conclusion a logical one?

I'm not the one who said a song couldn't sound as taken from ABACAB because you used certain instruments.

That's my opinion, clone bands have no merit to me, I only gave 3 stars (Above the average) because of the performance, not because the music,

Now, a good copy..Lets say The Musical Box, they don't pretend to be more than they are, a tribute band that plays Genesis music and not a band who claim they were decided to do "the songs Genesis never did", but this guys present a great and careful show...That's a good copy.

There are multiple bands INSPIRED in Genesis, like Rael from Argentina for example, but all of them added something of them to create something different, or without going too far in time "5Bridges" are clearly inspired by Genesis, but they created much more than only a copy despite the similarities between Peter Gabriel and their lead singer's voice, they released an album which IMO is one of the best of last year....Of course none of them is a copy.

And I don't know it all, only have an opinion.

The last sentence shows who should return to Kindergarten "Or you rate me as I want or never rate me again and I will insult you" (very mature of your part).

"The insults start when there are no arguments", but I won't fall in that game

But back to the issue you believe Unifaun deserves 4 stars...I don't, as a fact I clearly said that IMHO deserves 2.5 stars but this is impossible in our system, so I gave 3 stars.

But don't worry I won't buy another UNIFAUN album, so hardly will review something from this band.

BTW: It's not my Archives Unifaun is here (with a BIO written by you, something we don't usually allow) because the band is Symphonic, not because it's original.

I must be a strange Genesis fan, but I believe I had enough of Genesis clone bands.

Each time I listen my favorite albums (Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme) I feel less impressed, because the real thing sounds less real with so many bands out there trying to sound like them.

I always thought a band needs something new to offer, even when inspired in another, but Unifaun doesn't offer us anything new or original IMO.

They are good musicians, that's beyond any doubt, but that's not enough for me on this days.

Unifaun will be added because they belong here and originality is not required.

Iván

Accepted to add UNIFAUN because they were suggested and it's Symphonic Prog, but I don' care for clone bands,

Good luck for both, but the fact that I'm a fan of Steve Hackett and he invited Unifaun, doesn't change my opinion about Unifaun's first album, is well performed but totally lack of imagination and originality..

Please read the other reviews

Quote I was totally disappointed! Oh man .. how come people talk about this band as good Genesis-like band? Well yeah, they try to be something like Genesis on the way the singer sings that it turns out to be like Phil Collins instead of Gabriel! (there are some segments that replicate Gabriel singing, like in "Swingers Party"). Why they use the name Unifaun? Why not "Abacab", "Mama", or "Who Dunnit?" ?

Or

Quote Being a Genesis fan, I enjoyed this record a lot but less than Neuschwanstein's. Why? Well because writing doesn't make you a writer. You have to be a gifted musician to be a true composer. That's why Genesis convinced: the quality of their melodies (and arrangements). And of course their originality. You'll find no real innovation here, and assumed influences. Great arrangements and production, yes. But some melodies aren't really convincing. In a nutshell, it's good music for nostalgic fans only. And I admit I am.

Can't you find the constant?

Are all of them Prog snobs also?

Now, look at this:
Quote

UNIFAUN Unifaun ratings distribution

2.97
(15 ratings)

5 stars: Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music(0%)
0%
4 stars: Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection(29%)
29%
 3 Stars: Good, but non-essential (64%)
64%
 2 stars: Collectors/fans only (7%)
7%
1 star: Poor. Only for completionists (0%)

Don't you see that 64% of the ratings are located in 3 stars? And that if it wasn't for your rating only 20% would had voted for 4 stars, and that the 2 stars would be around 10%?

Don't you see that your average is 2.97, slightly bellow the rating I gave you?

Please don't blame me, it's the general opinion.

Iván

EDIT: I only have to add,. that despite you've insulted me twice, I haven't replied in the same way, just gave my opinion that I won't change

I have to review this album - you have me intrigued now, Uninad!
Nice response to a very strong attack, Ivan.

You have to review as you feel you should or you may as well NOT review at all. You have to be honest and reflective, fair but firm and have standards that you will not budge from. I will listen to this UNIFAUN and judge for myself. I wont be swayed by others opinions as usual but if I think it's nothing but a Genesis clone I will say so. When you put albums on here you are pretty much at the mercy of reviewers. That's how it goes. It is still the best for of exposure and not everything will appeal to people generally. If you do not like criticism, get out of the business!

David, I haven't been malevolent at all, nothing Mr Sylvan has quoted comes from my review, everything quoted in this thread is from a reply to his violent review in which he attacked me against PA guidelines, reason why this review was deleted and as you know not by me, because I don't have the power:

Yes in my review I am direct, but I also say things like:

Quote "Mr. Marmaduke and the Minister" starts with a very nice keyboard intro that at last reminds me of early GENESIS, somehow reminiscent of "Battle for the Epping Forest" but sung by Phil Collins in Peter Gabriel's style. Not a masterpiece but the competent use of the keyboards makes it worth to listen.

(...)

Quest for the Last Virtue" puzzles me, starts as very late GENESIS or Phil Collins solo stuff, but after the first three minutes and when was falling asleep, a radical change that combines elements from various albums wakes me up, again the keyboard work is outstanding, after a sung section the band enters into an excellent instrumental break, which is extremely interesting, only interrupted by the annoying vocals, and again another change.

Now they sound very close to Wind & Wuthering with special emphasis in the acoustic guitar which is played with singular dexterity, but again they move to a long and refreshing mellotron section in the vein of "A Trick of the Tail" that leads to a complex vocal finale, another good track for UNIFAUN.

(...)

Bon-Apart is an incredibly beautiful piano solo that captivates me from the first moment, even when very short, is a completely original piece of music that proves this guys are able to write good music if they try to be original.

Of course I mention the songs that sound like copies, but my review was 100% honest and recognized the merits of some tracks.

Even more, my conclusions are:

Quote  Now, how to rate this album? 2 stars seems too low because these guys are very skilled, but I rated much more solid and ORIGINAL albums with 3 stars, so the right rating would be 2.5.

Not existing this possibility in Prog Archives and being a debut album from a new band of talented musicians who I'm sure can do better, will go with three stars, hoping they find their own sound.

You can find the link to my review and tell me if it's specially aggressive or offensive at any point.

I written strongest things about other artists, and none has replied insulting and calling names.

Now my replies in the thread are stronger, but it's a logical response to an aggression.

Just to end...Are 3 stars a bad rating?

Iván

EDIT: I have written 400 reviews, and never received a report, of course some people didn't liked my Opeth or Big Generator review, but they used the comment feature, Mr Sylvan used the reviews to attack me, and if you notice, some stronger things are said about his album on other reviews..

On the other hand some of my reviews have been posted by the official site of artists, and not 5 starts reviews, mostly 3 or 4 stars, but we are talking about people who accept an honest perspective.

Actually Ivan I think there are a lot of positives here - I highlighted positives in green and negatives in yellow on a word doco. there were lots of yellow and quite a few green parts.  The main issue is you felt they were clones and need to banch into some original territory., Fair enough they even admit on their website to being Genesis inspired. Is clones a harsh word? i would never use it. I would rather say they are inspired by genesis and as soon as you hear their msic you are immediately reminded of the greatness of Genesis, and that may not be a bad thing But I dont think your review is that scathing really. You could have awarded a worse rating, 3 is a good review for a debut 2 piece band.

I apologize Ivan, didn't mean to take sides (and my use of "malevolance" was unfortunate LOL).   I wish I had the album to hear for myself.   Hmm, a good case of any publicity is good publicity (?)

Of course there are negative parts, because I believe there are bellow the average tracks, but my main criticism is centered in the lack of originality, never said they suck, or they are incompetent musicians, by the contrary, I always highlight their skills except in the vocals, because they are incredibly close to Phil Collins and I can't stand his voice.

A musician who is now my friend  sent me his debut album before being released, and one of the things I said is that he should find a new vocalist instead  because the voice is not the most adecquate for a Symphonic album...And he is the singer (well also plays guitar and keyboards).

Did he insulted me?
Did he called me Snob?

No, he published my review in his site the same day (it was the first review because it was written on the release day), because he said it sounded absolutely honest.

Now, the word clone...Please, even a super band as Triumvirat is called Clone and has much more originality than Unifaun, and you don't see Jurgen Froitz protesting.

So if it's hard..Yes, but honest and I believe fair.

Iván

Oh, I've tried to do this in Firefox and it works here. Error on my side then.
There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

Scott, your Wall review was really enjoyable.  Loved the enthusiasm you obviously have for it, which I share.  I love the little in between songs so many people consider "filler" tracks, I appreciate them more than the radio tracks actually.
...that moment you realize you like "Mob Rules" better than "Heaven and Hell"

Thanks for reporting that Rune.  It's never a good idea to write a "retaliatory" review.

I read your review as I wrote mine (and I looked at the 7 other five star reviews, or whatever it was), and I keep asking myself as I listened, "What in the world are these guys hearing that I'm not?"

But it still sounds awful to me.  No, I have not listened to it 30+ times as our reviewer would implicitly require of us.  LOL

And the funny thing is, I actually like several avant-prog albums, but I do not care for this one, no.

The Residents - Not Available

I caught it just in time I think. Very shocking language for a review, completely uncalled for.

Who was it ? Who is this rating manipulator ?
