I've had both as pets all my life except when I went off to college and had to live in an apartment.  Pet deposit Angry.  It's like making parents pay kid deposits and I think that most people will admit kids can be much more destructive.  LOL

My old dog, Tori, died last year.  Tropical fish died off from attrition.  My black cat, Squeaky, has had amazing endurance.  Had her before the dog and she's still with us. Big smile

So, I'm going with tropical fish.  Damn, that's not an option. Tongue

While not much of an animal lover, I like cats the most.  They seem to be the most complex, personality-wise.

Cats. No contest.

Cats. Dogs love everyone. You have to earn a cat's love.

Had a dog.  Nice white lab.  Dog hated me.  I hated dog.  Dog bit babysitter, dog shat on deck and in fact everywhere.  $100 every three months to get her ears cleaned so she wouldn't scratch them bloody.  Kids loved her.  Alas, she's now gone.

Have four cats, all complete idiots, though intelligent enough.  Bangin' on the cupboard doors for food, scratchin' on the door to go out, scratchin' on the door to come in.  Idiots.  The cats like me.  I like the cats, 'cept about 3:30 in the morning.

Animals, they're laughing at us.

Dogs for me -- don't care for cats.
(I'm allergic too -- that doesn't help.)

Most prog fans seem to be cat people though, if previous incarnations of this poll are any indication. Must be the loner/outcast/supeiority thing...,.Wink

If you own 3 of more cats, you're officially a weirdo. Stern Smile

I've had a few dogs in my life.  They were good dogs.  Trixie way back.  She was a good dog and a mutt, I don't know the variety, we called them Heinz 57.  Got hit by a car.  Trixie Mark II was good dog. Another mix.  She got hit by a car.  Fred, a German Shepherd/Husky mix.  Did not get hit by a car.  Died of old age.  Tori was with me for a long time.  Lhaso Apso something other mix.  She was a good dog.  Died of old age.  Cats.  I've known more than a few cats as pets.  Most memorable Snowball, a white cat.  She came from a shelter and was actually a blood donor cat.  She was a good cat.  Died of old age.  My first black cat, Midnight, she was a good cat, hit by a car.  Bottom line.  If you like your pets don't let them roam free.  Treat them with kindness.  You will likely outlive them and probably never forget them.

Apologies to any of my cat or dog friends I may have forgotten.

Cats. We have two Siamese which had been just kittens when Jean and  I first met,so they are pretty old meanwhile. Nevertheless, we have a dog too since last year; our kids found a collie puppy which had been exposed.

I'd answer, but the cat is sleeping on my computer chair, again.

Yeah, we're weirdos.  Every damned cat we own has been rescued from certain death.  I figured we'd never have more than one or two, but the flat out negligence and irresponsibility of others has led to four.  Plus the suckers have basically more than the traditionally assumed nine lives.  We've got an 18 year old dude who was lunch for a coyote a couple years ago until my wife let out an Arthur Brown shriek and said coyote dropped the dude.  He's low maintenance, 'cept he pukes all the time.

You are wrong about that. It is not your computer chair, it is the cat's chair. Just like anything else in your home belongs to it. You  are only being kept as a kind of butler to the cat. At least that's the cat's view of things.

My cat treats me like furniture.  Over the years I do get back at the cats and dogs I've known.  Anyone out there tickle the hairs between their paw pads when they are sleeping? LOL
