Topic: Transatlantic (Philadelphia, April 24 2010) Posted: April 25 2010 at 09:36 |
I'll start out by posting the setlist (which was fantastic): Set 1: The Whirlwind in its entirety
[intermission]
Set 2: All of the Above We All Need Some Light (Neal and Roine switched vocal parts) Duel With the Devil
Encore Bridge Across Forever Stranger in Your Soul They did a really great job playing all of the 3-hour setlist, and it was obvious that all 5 members (Neal Morse, Pete Trewavas, Mike Portnoy, Roine Stolt, and Daniel Gildenlow) really had a great time. During Stranger In Your Soul, Neal went and played Mike's drum kit for a while, as Mike crowd surfed. All of TA showed a high level of enthusiasm and emotion, and it was really great to see a band like that. Of course, when you add on the fact that Mike Portnoy has some of the hardest drum parts in all of prog, Pete had some really tough basslines (especially in The Whirlwind), Roine had some great guitar solos, and Neal had to handle keyboard and vocal duties, it's really amazing that they played everything with such perfection. There were hardly any mistakes throughout the entire concert, which really amazed me. Portnoy was a technical monster as always, and I stood right next to him for most of the show. It's really amazing what a talented drummer he is. So my rating for this concert is 5 stars, easily. It's probably the best live act I've ever seen, and I would see them again anytime. If you live in Europe, Transatlantic is coming there next, so I highly recommend that you get yourself a ticket. This was kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me, and it was well worth it. ![Thumbs Up Thumbs Up](smileys/smiley20.gif) -Jeff

Sounds seriously awesome! I would pay anything to see them play over here.
Thanks for sharing, Jeff.

No problem Pablo. ![Cool Cool](smileys/smiley16.gif) I didn't know you were so much of a TA fan, Pablo! I knew you liked The Whirlwind (a lot) but I was pretty sure that you didn't love their other stuff very much...

I'm not a HUGE fan of Transatlantic, but seeing Roine Stolt, Mike, Pete and Neal together is something I would really like to do before I die, lol.
I've told you various times that 'All of the Above' is probably my favorite song from the 21st Century, or at least my favorite epic ever without counting the 70's classics.
My favorite song by theirs, as you should have figured out, is All of the Above, but my favorite album is probably The Whirlwind, not sure.

Hope you guys enjoy it! I went with one of my friends, my cousin, his dad, my dad, and 2 of my uncles, and we all had a blast! ![Clap Clap](smileys/smiley32.gif) Ours was a standing only venue as well... I would have liked a chair, but it was well worth it.

If you guys want to hear some great conversations with Daniel, Roine and Pete plus some stories the promoter here in California had with the rehearsals and the concert check out his podcast from Jim Harrel's internet radios show Papa Jim's matinée. These conversations are really candid plus you will hear some of the unmixed live tapes from Calprog (no full songs). http://www.papajarchives.com/Sounds/Radio/Matinee_Apr24_2010_128kbps.mp3

I saw the 'Transatlantic' show in Downey,CA. (the 1st 'live' performance of "The Whirlwind") and I am in total agreement . . . the show was EPIC and one of the best I'd ever seen. I can't wait for the DVD as they'll not be playing here in California again.

Theater of Living Arts. The line wrapped around down the street, around the corner, and behind the building and then some. It was freaking -packed-.

http://www.papajarchives.com/Sounds/Radio/Matinee_Apr24_2010_128kbps.mp3
the first 20 minutes is Jim playing music but there is over an hours worth of interviews (candid like standing n the parking lot talking), music from the concert and stories about the rehearsals and the show in Downey.
