Evan Parker was pretty great, although the area was kind of scary. And it was recorded, so maybe I'll hear it on CD some day! The problem with the improv guys though is that the live performances are never as good as the best takes culled for CD.

Well the good one doesn't exist on its own. The final piece was actually very good because they finally gelled. I would say it's only a 3 star performance based on what I heard, but it might be better on repeated listens. Evan opened with a 10 minute solo on soprano saxophone that had no breathing pauses, which was technically very difficult, but not that great for me because it was just a lot of notes, but on repeated listens I might hear more of the logic of it. And the pedal steel guitarist was mixed too loud and didn't know when to shut up for the first half (I think she was too excited by being recorded playing with somebody famous because she was not), but maybe on the CD they can EQ that away.

But I didn't go there to hear a unique Evan Parker solo that blows my mind, I went there to sit 10 feet away from him while he played for an hour and a half and shake hands with him afterwards. And that alone was worth the 1.5 hour drive each way. I wanted to ask him if he was ever going to record with Peter Brotzmann again, but then I decided that maybe they had a falling out I didn't know about and it would be like asking him what is the deal with Derek Bailey. But it turns out on actually googling it they recorded an album together in 2004, so I would have just looked stupid! Although it seems they didn't play much together on that album so I guess it still would be a valid question.

I can't remember who, but there is a video of a guy doing the circular breathing thing on sax somewhere on Youtube, I thought it was good. I think it is that Ned Rothenberg fellow.

I heard a song on Youtube and I'm going to buy the album someday because it was great. The youtube songs of Tatsuya with Satoko Fujii were also great, but I'm not crazy about the straight Ruins material because of the guitarist and the repetition. Zeuhl is just not a very interesting genre for me.

Also, there were a surprising number of women and older people there. I guess I should have talked to somebody during the 20 minute intermission but I'm such an anti-social loon I was too busy pacing around trying to get a moment in to say hi to Evan. I ended up doing it at the end when he was packing up his stuff.

Also, there were Zeitgeist cards by the door with all the flyers and stuff. :|
