It is the only genre in which keyboardists get to wear a cape!

Enjoy asking your Country Music loving friends if they would like to hear a song by "John Anderson" and then playing Olias of Sunhillow for them!  When they look dismayed, earnestly reply "What's wrong?  and show them the Jon Anderson album cover..."

I apologize for not being clear with my intention on the initial post.

I meant this to be an invitation for everyone to share their own reasons to be a Prog Fan in the style of a "Top Ten List" (as made famous/infamous by David Letterman)

Please add reasons to the list.  I'm sure there are many funny responses already swimming around in the Prog-brains of individuals far more witty than myself!  Smile

reason #56: "...because sometimes I like to hear musicians who can actually play their instruments."

(Although in honesty I do enjoy a lot of the punk/post-punk/alt rock bands to emerge over the past 30 years, too.  Sometimes I'm in the mood for The Pixies, other times I want Gentle Giant.)

SO TRUE!  Also true for oboe, viola, french horn... basically fill in the blank for any number of instruments.   Clap

In the early 1980's, I met a Rush fan whose father was a music teacher.  He played oboe growing up and had really enjoyed it but kind of dropped off because he was really into rock music and there just wasn't much of a vehicle for him to play oboe in that context.  Obviously, we were ignorant of the far reaching greatness of Prog!  He should have been in a Prog Band!!!

It makes you think you're smarter than most typical music fans. (and generally speaking, you are)

1. Because the music is 'something completely different'.
2. Because it's clever, and gives me a little air of intellectualism, who doesn't like that?
3. Because it puts me into another dimension if I get utterly smashed and listen to it when I'm splayed out on the floor like a dead cat.
4. Because it can be used to annoy and freak out anyone who isn't into it, so I can have a good laugh. LOL
5. Because I've met some bizarre and interesting people as a result.
6. Because it has given me all sorts of new ideas when I'm creating my own music.
7. Because it proves the superiority of rock above all other genres. (yes, that's how good I think it is...)
8. Because I never, ever tire of it as there are too many sub-genres for that.
10. Because it gives me a break from Slayer.
