Topic: Your Personal Greatest Hits (prog rock) Posted: April 06 2010 at 01:25 |
the Concept of the Greates hits albums gives serious musicians and prog rock fans a bad taste in their mouth (oral caveti), but here is the questions. (hypotheticly all the prog albums in the world are banned for some wierd reason) 1. you had to put for your own pleasure a complection of prog song (hits) what songs would that be (and it depends on the size of your Burn CD) I don't remember the normal size of burn CD is it 40 mb . 2. If a Friend /(or foe) ask you about Prog rock and want you to burn him CD to show him the essense of prog, which songs would you shoose.

I'd like to give this some thought although you will find it moved to a different forum (top tens and lists) I expect.

it would have to be two 80 min. discs... classic prog cannot be summed up in less than an hour and a half.. and I'd stick to the more mainstream prog bands... I don't think a band like Gentle Giant , Magma, or Camel is a stepping stone into prog.
YES (60:12)
Starship Trooper - Yes (9:29)
Close To The Edge - Yes (18:44)
And You And I - Yes (10:09)
The Gates Of Delirium - (21:50)
PINK FLOYD (38:08)
One Of These Days (5:56)
Time (7:05)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) (13:40)
Pigs (Three Different Ones) (11:28)
EMERSON, LAKE, AND PALMER (18:57)
The Barbarian (4:32)
Hoedown (3:43)
Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression, Part 1) (8:42)
KING CRIMSON (31:30)
21st Century Schizoid Man (7:26)
In The Court Of The Crimson King (9:27)
Larks' Tongues In Aspic part 1 (13:37)
GENESIS (25:49)
The Musical Box (10:22)

My first list only answers question 1.
The essence of prog on one disc is near impossible but I would go:
Genesis - Suppers Ready
Yes - And You And I
ELP - Hoedown
Rush - Xanadu
PFM - Out Of The Roundabout
Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part1)
that should fit easily on one CD.

There have already been a couple of threads in which I have posted my own collection of songs (which in fact I have burned into a CD and love to listen to it). Here I go again:
1. Pink Floyd. Shine on You Crazy Diamond 1.
2. King Crimson. The Court of the Crimson King.
3. ELP. Tarkus edited: a) Eruption; b) Stones of Years; f) Battlefield.
4. Yes. And You And I.
5. Jethro Tull. Thick as a Brick (from Live, Bursting Out).
6. Genesis. Firth of Fifth.
7. King Crimson. Starless (Live, from Collectible King Crimson Vol.1, CD. 1).

How ‘bout:
“Awaken” -- Yes
“Hocus Pocus” -- Focus
“On the Run/Time” -- Pink Floyd
“Mind Ecology” -- Shakti
“Castlerigg” -- Iona
“Da Zeuhl Wortz Mekanïk” -- Magma
“Romantic Warrior” -- Return to Forever
“The Musical Box” – Genesis
“Meredith” – Oceansize
“A Trip to the Fair” – Renaissance
That ought to fill a CD with enough diversity.
