Is belief in The Devil a requirement for being a "true Christian?" |

Well, it is mentioned quite some times in the New Testament.
Now to something completely different (or not?): http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/269234 |

It is. And not translated like all the other words. I often wonder why the word "diabolos" is made into a proper name with no justification. It should be translated "slanderer" or "accuser." Same thing with Satan ("ha-satan"), Hebrew for "adversary." A lot of biblical "problems" would be cleaned up really quickly if those two words were just translated by the same rules of grammar that everything else is instead of turned into proper names. |

@Rob: But the New Testament was written in Greek, if I'm not wrong.
The ancient people never used words as parts of a fixed grammatical construct, but as very flexible means to interpret. Any translation must aim for the direction the original author was aiming, instead of the direction of some wanted universal meaning. Otherwise it's not a good translation. We have like 6 religion threads and I get to hijack the shred room! Anyway, you ask "but what about hell" as though the devil has something to do with hell. I believe hell means eventual shame and destruction for the unrepentant- not eternal torture. The concept of eternal torture is a Westernized one and makes no sense in an Ancient Near Eastern context. I honestly believe the idea came about to "scare" people into the church, and that's unfortunate. |

^ The pagan Greeks and Romans also had a placed for the eternally damned souls, so that's not at all a foreign concept to the culture we're talking about.

There are places throughout the whole Bible where "the good guys" are called by these terms. Peter is called Satan (i.e., an adversary)- see Matthew 16:23. Also, people wonder about David taking the census in the Old Testament. One book says God moved him to do it, and the other says Satan did. It tickles me to see theologians and scholars work through all sorts of literary gymnastics with this one. But I see the meaning as very clear- God was acting as David's adversary. There was no malevolent demon involved at all. |

That's nice, but - you shouldn't talk about the "whole" of the Bible as there isn't such a thing, really, from a language point of view of course. At least the two major parts of it (O & NT) are completely different things in this respect. - I'm really interested only in the New Testament because there's where the hard core of Christian stuff is. @Jampa: I like talking about this kind of harmless stuff instead of threads like the religious one, where everybody tries to prove how bad a person the other poster is |
