They are certainly not just focused on anglo bands. I had discovered many great Italian and German prog bands through the magazine Classis Rock presents prog and Mojo. Not everyone lives in Europe so it is essential to give exposure to these bands as much as possible. only yesterday i listened to PFMs version of 21st Century Schizoid man on youtube and it was stunning. Also discovered the awesome Riverside from Poland and Magma (from planet X).
Its all good. I love theprog mag and eagerly await every issue. I use it to coincide with my prog collection and interests and indeed this website. its great to have a mag in your hands that has no articles on Coldplay, Pink or Rihanna. So death to hip hop, crap rap and mainstream music - Long live Prog! And long live this amazing magazine.
i just know that will get a flaming... |
No flaming here. I completely agree with you. It's fantastic there's a mag on the shelves which writes articles on the music I actually care about and none on the music I don't care about. Death to hip hop, mainstream music, etc.
Sometimes, i admit to checking out the competition when i'm in a newsagent. I pick up Rolling Stone (urgh!), NME (Double urgh!) or Kerrang or something. I never buy these mags, of course. I only flick through it and chuck it back on the shelf in disgust. Not one single article on Rush, or Dream Theater, or Porcupine Tree, or Yes, or whoever. The most you'll ever get is Pink Floyd. I find it offensive when NME raves about the latest talentless landfill indie band or Oasis clone. Or when Rolling Stone writes about drivel which has nothing to do with rock music at all (like hip hop or Pink, etc). Or when Kerrang! writes about the most appalling emo rubbish (Paramore, My Chemical Romance, etc )
Kudos to Prog magazine for keeping it real!

Thats great kashmir! We are on the same page here. I agree that Rolling Stone, surely the most famous rock mag, is not just about rock, look at the covers! Some of them are offensive. The cover about Muse was great tho so the mag is capable of great covers and articles. Mojo buries it tho as does classic Rock for prog articles.
the latest prog mag I have features Tull, Mostly Autumn and Portnoy - who are three proggers i rate as highly as indispensable when it comes to prog. Kudos to the mag too for dedicating Portnoy to progger of the year.
Great mag - long live prog

I found issue #7 on the shelves of the newstand and opened the wallet and leafed through it
It's even weaker than issue #6...... sooo I put everything back into the wallet and put it back on the shelf.... deciding to boycott something I'll read maybe less than one hour....
there is simply NOTHING in it for me.

Issue 7 was not their finest hour, I agree with that. I am not a happy camel.

I agree with both of you whole-heartedly - of course it's not perfect, no magazine is; and of course it's not cheap outside the UK (it's not that cheap inside the UK ) & yes, you may know the facts presented in some of the articles... but not everyone will.
Personally - subscribed to the mag & looking forward to the next issue; those who don't like it, leave it on the shelves for someone who does

I agree also. The very fact that you can go into WH Smith and buy a magazine dedicated to prog is something to be glad about.

I completely agree. I was absolutely over the moon when I saw this magazine for the first time (sadly only a month ago so I have missed a lot of issues). I am more than happy to pay £7.99 for all the info that they cram into that magazine. Although I do agree, the latest issue was a little disappointing, especially the PG interview... But I'm ok with the price because it's one of 2 magazines I would ever pay to read (Possibly 3). And once a month, it's fine!

It's not as frequent as once a month actually. to be honest I thought it was suposed to be every 3 months originally but each issue seems to come with a shorter gap - I think there was only about 6 weeks between the last 2. I've subcribed for 4 issues but to be honest If it gets down to monthly I'm not prepared to shell out the price that frequently.

I still wait eagerly for each issue - it keeps me up to date with whats out there and i discover as much as I do here but its all in one single mag!
i think they should bring out a prog calendar next year.
Classic Rock presented a Hipgnosis album cover calendar and thats as close as it s got. Maybe I will make my own.

I work at WH Smiths and today sold this magazine to a local musician who is friends with Tim Palmer (producer of In Absentia), we had a good natter about prog, which was a lovely surprise during work. (even though he called petrucci a 'soul-less git').

I just received issue 6 (late but still great_)
Marillion on cover and a good CD - I thought it was worth the effort. Hope Issue 7 is good

Got to say this Magazine is exccelent. I only came across it when I saw
No.5 in WH Smiths. I have managed to get hold of isuues 2,3 & 4 and of
course have since purchased 6 & 7. I love the CD's that come with
the mags, they heve put me on to whole new journey of discovery in the
world of Prog. If I like a track or if there is an article in the mags
highlighting a band that sounds interesting, I'm straight on Spotify
looking to see if I can find more. Some of the bands I currently have on
my playlists are Porcupine Tree, IQ, Mostly Autumn, Also Eden,
Touchstone, Karmakanic and 2 of my favorites at the moment - Magenta
& Steve Thorne. Many may have been fans of or familiar of the above
but leading the sheltered life as I do sometimes , I have not. So this has reawakend my love
of prog.
I know there has been som critisism of issue 7 but to be honest I
thought it was one of the best so far. A lot of it was given over to
bands I hadnt heard of and am now in the process of checking some of
them out, some of whom are really good. The Peter Gabriel focus was good
as I went to see him recently at the O2 and was a good read.
I think as a magazine published every 2 months, its perfect takinginto account conten and price. If it went
to monthly, they would have to do something about the price, especaily as I am sure they would be unable to maintain the quality. At long
last us old proggers have something to smile about . PS AtomicCrimsonRush, Icelandic Volcanos permitting, I am flying out to Oz next week so if you are in the Perth area, I could try and grab you a copy of issue 7 (if there are any left)

A nice article as well. Peter is getting a lot of attention lately. Mojo had an extensive article about him as well recently.
