I won't waste my time deliberately trying to find the worst prog band in the universe...but as far as I'm concerned, the worst prog is to be found in the Tech/Extreme section and Post Rock/Math Rock section. The former sounds like bears being slaughtered and the latter is barely music, but that's only my opinion.

this will probably get me the ultimate flame-fest ,but I don't really care:

Frank Zappa.

I have never been able to listen to more than 30 seconds of anything that he did...

it either leaves me bored out of my mind; feeling like he's "trying too hard"; or just doesn't sound like music to me.

I honestly don't even consider him "progressive", but many others do...

to each his own I guess.
Iv'e got sXe!!!

How could no one mention the Transsiberian Orchestra? Arguably the most useless band that ever existed?

I'm getting tired of the talk about these threads being "negative"Dead

Give me a break- 90% of the discussion on these boards is subjective in nature- and if people want to rant on why they think a band is garbage- they have every right. If you don't want argument or your feelings hurt, stay away from the thread! The title pretty much tells you what to expect!

Ah, but coming up with "best" bands is merely constructive, while coming up with "worst" bands is so much fun!

Unless, of course, you're taking it seriously.

I liken it to a sports radio show- if everyone was positive, it would be boring.

Porcupine Tree. Except according to swilson they are not a prog band, they are a band that makes "porcupine tree music".

So as far as bands that identify themselves as prog, I will have to nominate Magellan. All the people hating on Dream Theater and ELP should hear what happens when a guy from New Jersey tries to combine the two.

I feel exactly the same way-one of my all-time favourite groups, the german Jazz-rock group Brainstorm, has been compared to Zappa, but as far as i am concerned, not on your life!

I don't know about "Worst Prog Band," but I'd vote Steve Howe's first solo LP as Worst Prog Album!  Ugh!

I have all Steve Howe's solo albums, and TRUST ME, he's done much WORSE than BEGINNINGS.
At least he was trying to stay somewhat true to the genre....in later years, his country-bumpkin
influences became much more present, on albums like QUANTUM GUITAR and GRAND
SCHEME OF THINGS, which sounded in places like Duane Eddy or Chet Atkins Tribute albums !

............not as good as OLIAS OF SUNHILLOW or FISH OUT OF WATER, for sure, but it was at
least better than Alan White's RAMSHACKLED, or Patrick Moraz' STORY OF i  !!!

The first Greenslade LP didn't float my boat, but I haven't heard it in years.  I tend to avoid bad prog, it shortens your life!
