If I may raise a serious question here at the risk of shocking everyone here who have read a few of my posts, I am a little cheesed off to see a certain new thread locked up, mainly because I didn't get the opportunity to make my own witty post but hey, rules are rules.
So a point for clarification, since we are a forum of many members from many countries, where is the line drawn for what can be discussed and what can't? As in: what country or countries get to set the legal standards by which the policy is enforced? To get to a specific example which got me thinking about the question, If all countries except for the USA were to make marijuana use legal, would it then be acceptable to discuss openly? If only the the US were to and no others, what then? What about other polarizing issues like Israel/Palestine? I am of course referring to the Phelps thread. Feel free to substitute "file swapping, polygamy, speeding", etc. for marijuana. (Perhaps that I raise these questions is plenty good reason why I must never be promoted to admin status.) From the Site Rules & Guidelines:
This is one of those issues which polarise opinions, but the bottom line is drug use is illegal in most places, & as such this thread is now closed. Just trying to stir up some crap, Cheers. Edited by Slartibartfast - February 03 2009 at 12:05 |

From what I know PA lives under Canadian Law, so I presume the rules were drawn in relation to the Canadian laws regarding illegal activities, propaganda, etc.

Good question.
I don't know the answer !
I think anything else than murder, rape and robbery (and the like) can be discussed here (talking about something is not the same as doing it IMO) and though I didn't use Marijuana for more than 20 years now I don't see anything wrong with talking about it.
my 2 cents.

I think in general terms this is making a mountain out of a molehill. While different countries may have variations in their laws, most of the basic things which are illegal are thus worldwide.
The admin team are not lawyers, we simply enforce our Rules and Guidelines pragmatically and with what we hope is good sense for the benefit of the site as a whole. I know we can count on our collaborators to publically support us in this.
There are plenty of other sites where illegal and dubious activities can be discussed. This is first and foremost a site dedicated to prog, and while we are happy to facilitate discussion of a wide range of other matters, we shall always err on the side of caution when it comes to the well being of the site.

Sorry about that, is it OK to both support you guys on what you do and raise silly questions?
And what are these other sites where we can discuss illegal and dubious activities? Could you furnish us with some links. Sorry that would probably violate site policy. Note to self, do own research. Obviously I have too much free time on my hands. I do like the answer about having to adhere to Canadian legal standards as this is a Canadian originated site. I think we should all be happy that most if not all of us are not Iranian or Chinese citizens as I've heard they are truly subjected to ridiculous amounts of censorship. Thanks also for Epignosis for that link to Cracked. Nearly made me spew my beverage out of my nose. |

If memory serves me right, Our cherished public broadcaster's web news-site, the CBC (CBC.ca), has always been a prime source of articles on studies detailing the benefits of , and relative harmlessness of this substance. These articles are also open to comment by readers.
And while the fascists, I mean Conservative party would love nothing better than to cut all public funding to this organization that enjoys an international reputation for unbiased reporting, most Canadians have vocally defended its' existence. Amen to discussion, boo to outright promotion. But where's the dividing line ? How many are killed by DUI drivers ? |

I just noticed this thread.
I started a thread a while back entitled : Mig 29 Fulcrum vs Boeing F-18E/F Super Hornet a while back and it got "shot down immediately". |

Hey, nudity =/= pornography or even obscenity. There are prog album covers which are more explicit than that
