My 17 y.o brother likes prog metal, and a lot of modern prog, that I've played him: Dream Theater, Radiohead, Muse, Porcupine Tree, Mars Volta, etc. He's a bit dubious about 70s prog, though. He does like Pink Floyd, and some Yes. But he prefers the Trevor Rabin- 90125 era.  |

I recently made a mix cd for my friend's car called "Intro to Prog"
It has "light" prog in chronological order, with the Moody Blues' Tuesday Afternoon, The Who's A Quick One, Kansas' Carry On My Wayward Son, and so on.
It's only a matter of time until they acquire the taste.

For open minded people, I would go with Shine on you Crazy Diamond, first part, The Court of the Crimson King, Tarkus edited to 10 minutes, And you and I, Firth of Fifth, Thick as a Brick (Live, Bursting out version), and Starless (I prefer the live version with violin). Perhaps for less adveturous people, the album could contain the pop hits from the 80's from the prog legends to introduce them to the bands, and then come up with proggier (but light) stuff.

Well usually i put on some prog and after like 10 seconds someone goes "booooring", and puts on some more accessible music. But I'm actually pretty proud that I got one of my pop-listening friends into Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, and Neu!. Always when no-one other is around to change the music we usually put on "Hallogallo".

Xhantous is not possible that you find an annoying Floyd fan!! Is simply impossible!!
Emotional arguments coming from a Floyd fan? no way!!   Ok computer the Dark side of the 90? Possibly almost the same gloomy feeling with the exception that Radiohead,s one ( wich is not my favourite band) is at least an interesting gloomy thing. 
The problem with Prog mainly comes from groups that can not fit in any given social situation, for example i have friends who can really enjoy Ozrics or Gong because they are trippy bands and they are right if you are in a exotic rave kind of gathering.
But try to put some Comus....   . They can not bear it- they dont know how to take it or to enjoy it. It happens much more the same with VDGG, especially with Pawn Hearts that is obviously a disc you have to get into...alone...with the lyrics in front of you..yeah like reading a book.
For these lets call it antisocial character of some of the greatest prog, is true that when you are too dare to put it in a reunion, its isolating listening character makes other people gets annoyed and you start to feel embarrased as well!!  Why the hell are you listening to these? Are you a freak or what?
Lets put Prodigy for 1512 time again Then everybody is happy in numb land.

Actually, Tom Petty's not too bad of a compromise. I quite enjoy "Wildflowers" every once in a while.

No way do I play prog when my friends are around. They would'nt understand. One time I got this kid stoned and I took him back to my place for a sonic melt-down. Played "Recycled" and of course, naturally
(somebody tell me, 1 L or 2?) he didn't even make it past the first side . It was funny, just the look on his face was WTF?

I tend to listen to prog with my mum. I leave it to classic rock with my younger mates (late teens/early 20's) overall. However I did meet Rush and Genesis fans in college of my own age which was enlightening. Most of the people who listen to the same stuff as me are my mates parents and my college tutors!

Last time I had some friends round my flat I stuck on a folk-ish Cardiacs side project called The Sea Nymphs. It's beautiful music, all tinkling piano and fragile vocals. I thought it would make a lovely accompaniment to the evening.
The music was too personal to me and my lady (t'is one of her favourite albums), and it was obvious that Tim Smith's idiosyncratic chord progressions weren't going down at all well with my guests. It was actually creating tension rather than the convivial atmosphere I'd hoped for!
I think experimental music of any kind only tends to work around people who've acquired that taste. Even a lot of seemingly unchallenging ambient stuff (Eno, Krautrock, etc.) is unlikely to go down well with someone who doesn't have an active ear and a good relationship with music. A lot of people don't listen to music actively - it's just something familiar to burble away in the background. Prog demands attention, and everyone in the room needs to be willing to give it some, or it'll end up damaging the atmosphere.

Back in my native Spain I grew up with a bunch of friends all of us prog fans, we would stay until dawn listening to prog together, we could play a bit at amateur level so we formed a band and played covers of Rush, Yes, Floyd, Marillion and so on... even when we were close to our 40's we continued the rituals (when their wives let them free, 2 fixed days a week). That was f*ing great 
A few years ago I moved to Belgium and I did not find even one person around who likes prog, and my wife hates it, so... alone in my car or in the attic, or with headphones, pffff... It's like I have to hide more for listening to music than for jerking off
People do not meet anymore to LISTEN TO music, they just want music as a light background on which they can have a chat while tapping their feet

I have like 2 friends that 'like' prog. And I'm not even very close with them so it can get annoying. I also get very annoyed when people talk during prog. |

All my friends like Rush around me, then hate it when they step outside my house. All my friends hate Yes, they think ELP is okay, they love Eloy, they like Budgie, they LOVE Uriah Heep, and they hate everything else.

Another one of my friends is into Progressive Rock. He's buying Fragile and Yessongs, and some King Crimson albums
Chris just bought a nice KC box-set and my other friend, Kieran, has got a lot of Prog
Wow, it's pretty awesome how my friends and I share some common interest in Prog.
We're actually in the midst of creating a Prog song with Guitar, Bass, Drums, Percussion, Synthesizer, and Trombone.... |

I have to tell my friends there are more prog bands than The Mars Volta...  I don't know, but every time I ask a non-prog-friend if they know a prog band it's The Mars Volta. I can't listen to THE MARS VOLTA, IT HURTS MY BRAIN AAAAAAHH....
