 Topic: Jethro Tull: A Passion Play

On my MFSL version, Tull's opus is divided into 16 tracks, selected by Ian Anderson for the DJ pressing of the album. So which part is your favorite?

I dunno but what a record.. I'm thinking greatest prog album ever? Anyone? No? Fine, pull it out and listen you flipping monkeys. I just wish the original mix was a bit less bassy

I agree! I have the MFSL version, and the sound quality is perfect. It's hard to come by, but worth it if you can find it.

Couldn't agree more. One of my favorite albums of all time, for sure. I voted for Overseer Overture, but could just as easily been anything in the second half. Man what a stunning record.

The Foot of Our Stairs; the riff they pull off is an interplay between each instrument. That's just genius.
A Passion Play also has one of my favorite album covers :)

Agreed, I have also thought this before.... Voted for The Silver Cord, but it is really close between that, Critique Oblique, Magus Perde, Lucifer, etc.....

I love the Prelude for it's liveliness, the flute duet in Memory Bank is some of Ian's best work, the way the song evolves into Best Friends is brilliant, the heavy style of Critique Oblique was copied by Starship in "Jane," the Forest Dance is simply enchanting, Foot of our Stairs obviously won the poll - I love it too. Hard to say, really. Hmm, guess I'll just have another listen...

Yes, thank you! This bit is a real headphone trip as well. I don't like to duplicate albums (too much music out there, not enough money etc) but I'd gladly fork out for an MFSL pressing of this album (CD format.) I've only one other (Layla) and it's well worth it. IMHO APP is not better than Brick (as they are very different pieces it's like saying Beethovens Erica Symphony is better than his Seventh or something.) Brick has rockier moments and actually is suited to re-arranging and editing for live performance. But APP has to be the most intellectual and possibly greatest original performance (just for the saxes and the vocals.) Can't take any tracks out of context either. This makes it difficult to vote but that flute duet is the business!

Five star piece of music. You can argue it is one of the greatest prog pieces ever. Don't like that it was broken down into parts. The beauty and wonder of APP is that it is a whole piece of amazing music that was meant to be listened to from start to finish. TAAB doesn't have to have parts identified, why is it important to do so for APP? The entire thing is a masterpiece.

I think it ironic that some versions are indexed (I assume they ARE indexed on the album - LP or CD?) Mine never were and are still not. I thpought it was just the MFSL version; my Japanese remaster is not.
Variation on a topic: With indexing has it helped it or not? I mean would TDSOTM by PF have been less successful had it been delivered as an unindexed piece. And if so why not APP? Which afaik is invisible to listeners outside Tull and progressive rock. Which these days means most people.

TDSOTM probably wouldn't have been as successful, plus it really is a collection of songs that flow together. APP on the other hand is not a bunch of songs that flow together, but a continuous piece of music which contains different, changing parts. In the original form there were no identified indexes, it was APP side 1 and APP side 2.

one of best JT underrated album of their discography even by Ian.  A masterpiece!,,,, I guess by this time Gente Giant were a huge influence on Ian. but why this album cover?
