Hi,
Have you ever thought about creating a 100 top prog artists list? What this would probably look like is like the top 100 list but limited to only 1 album per artist to allow for more variation.

So the top 10 would look like this instead of the normal list, etc.

1

(911 ratings)
WR = 4.5913
Selling England By The Pound
Genesis
Symphonic Prog
Studio, 1973
Buy
2 4.63 Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music
(1005 ratings)
WR = 4.5907

Buy
3 4.62 Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music
(808 ratings)

7 4.49 Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection
(266 ratings)
WR = 4.3838

Buy
9 4.45 Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection
(308 ratings)
WR = 4.3543

I feel that this would be helpful to those new to prog and allow for people discover more new bands, instead of collecting numerous albums by the same groups.

Think about it...

I've conceived another enhancement of this - count rating of all studio albums and divide it by the number of albums. We'll get ultimate average or artists output for whole career.

Seems worth of interest too ?

Your idea, Jake, looks interesting, even it's just matter of front rows - later on (50-100), not so many bands have two and certainly not more CD's. But it's good thing to do, however, not sure how hard it would be to implement it.

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

I like your idea even better, to be honest, but then we get bands like Genesis who have amazing and (excuse me) horrible material. There are many, many bands like that.

What about restricting the number of albums by each artist to, for example, 5. Only the top rated albums by any given artist would count, which would prevent the likes of Invisible Touch and Open Your Eyes lowering the average rating. I don't know if this would be practical though... just a suggestion.

That would give a top topped by bands who only released one great album LOL

Such a feature could easily be weighted much in the same way the charts are weighted already (placing an emphasis on number of reviews- hence an album with 2 fives and 1 four would have a higher rating than an album with just a single five star rating).

^Indeed, find the average amount of stars per rating of the band in their studio album section and weight them by the amount of reviews/ratings they have.

If that would be possible, then there's no reason not to do it, I think.

This is a completely awesome idea and would be a vast improvement over the current top 100 list.

I think it would prove to be much more helpful and interesting.

As long as it doesn't replace the existing chart. Sounds fine.
