Topic: Van Der Graaf - The Least We Can Do", or "Present" Posted: February 15 2010 at 11:42
I am trying to make up my mind about which Van Der Graaf album I should buy out of the two. I already own "H To He", "Pawn Hearts", "Godbluff", and "Still Life", and consider them all masterpieces. So, which one should I get, and why?

If you like the albums you mentioned 'The Least' might be the best choice. The vocals on the later albums are a bit different then in the seventies. Furthermore the artwork of The Least is very very good.

I think you might be right. I'm listening to "The Least" on myspace music and I'm enjoying it quite a bit! I also read a thing about "Present" being copy protected. Is this true? I'm asking, because I like to put everything on my mp3 player so I can enjoy it on trips.

You need to get The LEast we can do......in my opinion, this is the album that sets up VDGG's future work. It still has some of the feel of Aeresol Grey Machine, but it shows them morphing into what they would become, almost sort of a "bridge" album from old sound to new sound.

Great stuff! (and I'm not in the least bit surprised) Thanks for the suggestion, that was a bit of a different style than I expected from them, which is always welcome.

Peter Hammill's solo career is something to embark on also. I'd say Chameleon, Silent Corner, & In Camera are better than World Record in many ways. Also, he unites the band on many of his solo songs as well.

The UPS guy just brought my copy of The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other. It sounds pretty great so far, thanks for the help! World Record is in my amazon shopping cart, as well, so that'll be the next step after I've digested The Least.

you shuld get all VDGG albums, caus they are all great, and since you like the ones you got you will like the rest too im sure!
Then try some PH solo!
It's more than likely that I will eventually own all VDGG albums! I'm not a completest, but when a band is good, I'll end up acquiring every bit of music they've ever recorded (this already has happened with Tull, Zappa, Rush, Gabriel-era Genesis, Procol Harum, and King Crimson) since I find it fun to listen to a band grow and progress from one album to the next. As for the Hammill material, do you have any suggestions?

^ Like TealFoxes said, start with Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night, The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage and In Camera. After those his style changed quite a lot, but I would still recommend A Black Box, Enter K and Patience.

Sounds great, I added what I could find to my wishlist on amazon!
