I get to pick my own presents this year so I'm going to take a trip to the local used CD store to see what deals I can find .  If nothing interesting is there, I'l dig around the internet for a bit.

Top 50,  I reckon mine would differ considerably, but with some convergance. No Shine on You crazy diamond? and "One For the Vine" which is a strange pick, I am not familiar with Boards of Canada! I will deliver my 50 when I have completed a formula that I am satisfied gives me what I perceive to be my favourite music......

Shocked Oops Embarrassed.  How the hell did I leave Shine On out?  Whilst it wouldn't be in my top 10 it would certainly be in the top 30.  There's loads of others I missed out too.  I'm going to work on this list and maybe get to 100.  Putting them all in order is impossible but I might just manage a top 10 in order Wink.

Boards Of Canada are electronic progressive but I wouldn't have thought they'd be your bag.  As you know, I've always loved my electronica.

One For The Vine a strange choice?  I'd say not, it's a wonderful track.  I've always thought those two post-Gabriel but with Hackett albums to be outstanding and I much prefer them to Trespass, Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme.  They are my 3rd and 4th faves, after Selling England and The Lamb.  I really should include something off The Lamb, but it's tough to pick out one, the whole album is outstanding and stands together brilliantly as one piece.

I'm kind of with Roj on this one.  "One for the Vine" is a fantastic song, I really like the live version from "Three Sides Live" as well.  I forget where I put it on my list, but it should be top 30 I would guess.

Regarding Genesis, "A Trick of the Tail" is in fact, my all time favorite album with "The Lamb", "Selling England" and "Wind and Wuthering" also being in my top twenty.  I think they had a string of four fantastic albums there.  I think their first three (not including . . . from Genesis to Revelation) are still a little weak compared to the following four.

Well, I got a $25 Amazon gift card, so I get to buy some music after all.  I went with the new Tangent album and the new Izz album.

As to the Genesis comments, I like the two post Gabriel with Hackett albums  well enough.  I love Wind and Wuthering, but find Trick to be pretty weak (the first two tracks are great, and Los Endos is good, but the rest I just can't get into).  Strangely enough my favorites go almost in order:  Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Trespass, Selling England, Wind And Wuthering, The Lamb, Trick.  Genesis Live fits in there somewhere as well (probably number 2 or 3).

For what it is worth, I love the new Izz album, but Padraic thinks that it is just OK, but not as good as their previous album.

The only IZZ album I have of now is Sliver of a Sun, which I've enjoyed (though I've only heard it once or twice so far). Would you recommend getting the new one or My River Flows? I've heard really good things about that one.

I'd probably go with My River Flows first.  That one really is excellent.

Thanks Jeff, no belated, today is still the day (I've got another four hours of birthday left so I'm living it up)

. . . (and by living it up, I mean that I'm putting my daughter to bed and watching a Dream Theater video)

Whoah!  This thread needs a bit of a bump.

A few observations on Kaipa's Keyholder which I've been playing a lot recently (another Christmas present).  I think this is a really fine album.  It didn't blow me away on first hearing but there was plenty to make me sit up and take notice.  After about 5 spins I'm really loving this and am a bit surprised they got slated so badly.

Roine and Jonas are sublime as usual and the rest of the band sound good to me.  It's quite TFK-ish to these ears so no surprise I like it Wink, and with a fair old smattering of Yes influence too.  I'm even quite happy with the Freddie Mercury- sounding vocalist.

I liked it so much I even ordered Notes From The Past, and that arrived yesterday along with Karmakanic's Entering The Spectra and Feel Euphoria by The Beard.  I know that album (Feel Euphoria) isn't too popular but at £4.50 I thought it was well worth a pop....

Roj - You Have mail, I'm too nervous to listen to music tonight - I listened to All of the Above on the way to work this morning - that is an EXCELLENT piece of prog - and the solo at the end is one of Stolts best IMO.

According the Hasse Froberg on Facebook, there will not be a Flower Kings disc this year. With Sum Of No Evil a few years old, we're going to go a pretty big span between FK discs.

I agree with Patrick. I like the new disc, but My River Flows is so amazing.

OK, I've taken the plunge.  Here's my (official) Top 14 prog tracks of all-time.....

1.  Flower Kings - I Am The Sun (complete)
2.  Yes - Awaken
3.  Pink Floyd - Echoes
4.  Flower Kings - Monsters & Men
5.  Flower Kings - Garden Of Dreams
6.  Pink Floyd - Sheep
7.  Genesis - Cinema Show
8.  Yes - Gates Of Delirium
9.  IQ - The Seventh House
10. Frost* - Black Light Machine
11. Glass Hammer - Further Up And Further In
12. Porcupine Tree - Yellow Hedgerow Dreamcape
13. Flower Kings - Stardust We Are

Honestly, choosing number 15 was impossible, so it's the top 14 that are set in stone.

On one hand this bums me out, I love the Flower Kings material and am always eager for more.

On the other hand, with the band members spread out, we're actually getting more Flower King type music from a variety of different sources.

I know Hasse Froeberg is putting out an album himself this year, I'm really looking forward to that.  Tomas Bodin is growing on me, I'm probably going to pick up "You Are" soon, The Agents of Mercy CD wasn't bad either.

Oh, and how could I forget, Karmakanic is probably the best off shoot of them all.  I'm really hopeful that Jonas will get them together for another album this year.  "Who's the Boss" was great at the first listen and it gets better with every listen.  Goran Edmon has a great voice, very distinctive.

There is also the 3rd World Electric jazz album, and a Weaveworld album with Jonas and his keyboardist from Karmakanic.

I agree, 'Who's the Boss' by Karmakanic is probably the best TFK album that the TFK never released, lol. Goran's voice is superb, and the keyboardist is outstanding way more present and virtuosic than Tomas Bodin in the TFK albums, IMHO.

Entering the Spectra is pretty good, but by no means in the standards of 'Who's the Boss'.

Sorry if I missed the discussion, but what do you think of The Whirlwind and Down and Out in Paris and London?
