Friends - sat at the pc having my first listen to the glory & genius that is Transatlantic's The Whirlwind, my special present from my special son. First impressions incredibly favourable, but I will give a lot more listens before commenting in detail.

Also downloaded Phideaux's Number Seven today.

Hey all, I'm doing a two part poll in the poll section.  One of the categories is best artist of the decade.  I'm not lobbying here or anything but I'd just like to point out that The Flower Kings released a lot of great music this decade.

Happy New Year (and you too Barney, what ever it is that you celebrate next)

Look at my avatar :-) familiar ?
There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

Remedy Lane has been depreciating on me lately. It was my favorite PoS album for a long time, but every time I listen to it my liking of it decreases.

^ Great call Himtroy, it's been reigning as my favorite song for about a year now.  Wait till you get to the second part.  I'm actually listening to "Paradox Hotel" at the moment.  Great Roine Stolt solo in "Touch My Heaven".

Welcome to the group.

What is the band "Boards of Canada" like.  I've not heard much about them.

Ahhhh, Boards Of Canada, my best musical discovery of the year.  They're a reclusive Scottish duo who make music that I would describe as possibly the most progressive electronic music I've ever heard.  As you know Tom, I'm quite big on my electronica Wink.

The music is warm, nostalgic, hypnotic, compelling and for me totally calming.  It's in parts almost ambient, with interesting rhythms and gorgeous synths aplenty.  Well worth a listen, IMHO of course.

Incredibly, they have been rejected by the PA admins after they were suggested for progressive electronic Ouch by a learned fellow PA scribe (Russellk step forward).  Honestly, how they are not on PA I really don't know.  Anyway, rant over.

"I am" has arrived from Moviemars US of A - a belated present to be sure, may get to listen to it tonight as my wife gets ready for the new years eve shindig down at the old White Swan...
Probably have enough time to listen to several TFK epics and she'll still be in her bra & knickers, then the Whirlwind while she's putting on her war-paint Thumbs Up

I have it for quite a while now and it's a MUST have for all prog fans indeed and most certainly for all epic lovers. Can you believe that this masterpiece only has 21 ratings ?? It should be about 500 or something !!

Shoot, at that point there's no need to go out for the evening.

Happy  New Year  (Extra spaces provided by Tori, the two year old daughter helping me type)  (she says Happy New Year also).

We got out ok - she started getting ready at 16:00 - Didn't get round to listening to anything though, had to do a few errands and pick up my son's girlfriend from work at 18:00...
Anyway I reckon that Phideaux and Mastodon may be my next purchases !!!

I have just listened to "I A M" - not too bad on the first spin - especially part one which showcased some nice synth runs - I am a bit put off by the male vocalist who's sort of rasping puts me off a bit. In the last part it sounds like he's going to cry !! - not my cup of tea, but there is plenty of good guitar and keyboards, just a pity it isn't an instrumental CD as it would already be lined up for a 2nd spin.
Mind you - who on this thread had Book of the Dead by K2 listed - I spun that after the Bodin. WHAT A BLOODY BRILLIANT CD !! - Allan Holdsworth on Guitar - is all his stuff as good as this because if it is i want to hear more !!!! This CD immediately took me back to the early eighties and the friday rock show playing bands like "AS ABOVE SO BELOW" - Let me tell you now - if you haven't got this CD - BUY IT IMMEDIATELY - also some lovely moog work by Ryo Okumoto - loads of Mellotron and only one poor track from five (the shortest one) - the opening track is AWESOME !!!

^I haven't heard K2, but Allan Holdsworth is indeed bloody genius! If you want more proof of that and you're fond of Jazz Rock, check out classics like Enigmatic Ocean by Jean-Luc Ponty, U.K by UK, Gazeuse! by Gong and Metal Fatigue by Holdsworth himself. Also worth checking Floating World Live by Soft Machine.
