I forgot to mention my current infatuation: German psych band ELECTRIC
ORANGE with their latest album Krautrock
From Hell. Their other albums are also highly recommended, particularly Morbus

Two recent findings, courtesy of a friend over at Prog Ears (spacefreak) who recommended these fine psychedelic bands that have recently released blissed-out freak-out psychedelic goodies with a deliberate retro sound (vinyl only):

Unterwasser - Live 2002 Electric Orange Krautrock Review by
Rivertree
— First review of this album —
![]() ELECTRIC ORANGE's masterminds Dirk Jan Müller and Dirk Bittner had been invited to perform two live sets during the 10th anniversary concert of the Manikin label in 2002. The event took place at the Toskana Therme - a thermal bath at Bad Sulza in Germany - and experienced 18 different performances of acts from all over the electronic scene. It was a 36 hour non-stop event with lightshow and over/underwater soundsystem. Due to this special happening with a relaxed and warm atmosphere ELECTRIC ORANGE was playing very floating, spacey performances managing the electronic side of krautrock here whilst people were drifting in the water or were lying around. They picked up some themes from the former 2001 studio release 'Abgelaufen!' but also older and new tunes. Because the music happened spontaneously, improvised, one can only recognize basics of this tracks. Ffurg is starting the first two hour set in a Tangerine Dream mood with a monotonic slinking beat by sampled percussion. Some twittering synths which are typical for space rock bands are also integrated. The dreamy Transit ins Jenseits with guitar contributions similar to Ashra is an excellent more psych oriented groover - gripping - always leaving you curious how the track developes. Fading into the shorter Sauerkirsch with a weird creepy touch the excerpts of the first set are finished. Not of ... is another psych monster mainly caused by Bittner's excellent guitar work and a dull electronic bass groove. Wet cake as a fascinating and somewhat confusing synth sample opens the door for Ortat the masterpiece of this set. Again a synthetically generated hypnotic bass is initiating this song which unites psychedelic and electronic elements in a special way. Drum samples are faded in after a while which cares for a killer groove, later followed by floydy organ and guitar - hard to overtop. With Span 2 Ashra and early TD like floating sounds are following now once more wheras Hydrog later is characterized by a more Can resp. Kraftwerk vibe. Mk closes this quite varied performance with a melodic flow dominated by guitar and organ which were swirling around nicely supported by a tambourine simulated drive. More than 150 minutes of groundbreaking trippy music. Take a seat - maybe in your bath if possible - with your headphones on and enjoy the voyage! Fans of electronic and spacey psychedelic sounds shouldn't miss this album.

Electric Orange Krautrock Review by

![]() I don't know if the song titles have any sense. It doesn't matter - the main thing is to judge the musical output in the end. Here we have an album with some band jams mastered by Eroc at his 'ranch'. Originally released as a long player in 2003 - platte is a german expression for vinyl - the digitalized version from 2007 contains two bonus tracks. ELECTRIC ORANGE is delivering a special unique album - something I've never heard before. Either you love it or not. Fans of Hammond drenched music must be satisfied. But don't expect rock songs as usual. The basis of this album are hypnotic beats, pointed out monotonous with intention and the band members are spinning a fine web around them with their instruments. kwark, nearly 20 trance minutes long, has a gloomy meandering begin. The song is absolutely Hammond infected but also with spacy guitars and raises in waves. holzbock with an impelling rhythm work remembers much at CAN. columb is my favourite - melancholic trippy with a floating beat because of the use of old drums. Probably suitable for a film music about camel riding across the Sahara - fantastic! Dedicated to mk with a swirling Hammond, caused by a Leslie I suppose, is recorded in memory of Michael Karoli from CAN who sadly died in 2001. This song was released on a Manikin Records sampler before. On flurstück something like a rhythm machine gives a minimalistic beat only accompanied by harmonium and flügel. The bonus tracks are rounding up the album with more variety. Don't listen to this stuff only for one or two times - you will lose. The more I hear this the more I like it. Very creative album. References to the old kraut and psych times are intended but ELECTRIC ORANGE are delivering something new. 3.5 stars really. Electric Orange Krautrock Review by

![]() Now it's time to present the current album of ELECTRIC ORANGE, a german band which was founded in the year 1992. The members describe their music as Neo Krautrock - that suits fine as a matter of fact. 'Morbus' - mastered by Eroc (Grobschnitt) - shines with much variety and a wealth of details is to be considered whereas the cover artwork is a controversial thing anyway. Very deliberately, I think. The songs are constantly driven by hypnotic grooves, embraced with space/psychedelic organ and synth layers. Samples and diverse other elements like german recitatives are integrated and there are many 'inventions for guitar'. ELECTRIC ORANGE's music is somewhat retro, inspired by Krautrock bands of the 60/70s with their typical Trance and Psych. But you can also feel a 'modern' TripHop/TripRock touch. Provided with some crazy ideas this album has a very special unique atmosphere. Einwahn is arranged to be the only way to get into the album for sure. I assume the band changes one letter of the german expression 'Einbahn' (One way). And it comes up a compelling song with a very repetitive rhythm. Initiated by some samples the track develops from a mysterious Trance mood to a Psych groover offering some impressions what follows in the next 70 minutes. Rote Flocken, cumbersome, seems to be provided with another title variation (Rote Socken?). A modified voice recitates german lyrics accompanied by distorted guitars. The track sounds like a krautrocked version of the french volkslied 'Frère Jacques' - absolutely crazy! Next one Span 5 has got its place on this album totally improvised without any reworking - a Space Jam which remembers me at AMON DÜÜL's Yeti decorated with some floydy keys. The title song Morbus has nothing to do with any sort of disease, right? A german voice with an accent is giving a lecture about ... nonsense? Weird guitars are interrupting this interesting lesson from time to time - what the hell is goin' on here? Errorman follows - gloomy, Mellotron pregnant, symphonic with heavy guitars and english spoken words. In opposite to this Flohfunknest swings because it's carried by a jazzy contrabass. Someone brushes his teeth, recorded secretely and used as the only long solo of the album - oh boy! Unfortunately I couldn't find any credit which band member is responsible for that! Traumama - another pun - you have 5 minutes to give it a serious consideration. Space/Psych with nice female voices and ASHRA guitars. Krautschock is beautiful relaxed with flute and organ - the song flows just like a meditation mass. Vibraphone alike sounds, Harmonium and freaky samples in the background are initiating the longest track Wald. A punching bass and spacy keyboards are giving the song a new direction after a while. Noticable is also one of the rare guitar solos at the end. Reaching enlarges ELECTRIC ORANGE's repertoire with a ballad surprisingly, supported by the use of acoustic guitar, percussion and Mellotron. The door to avantgarde music is opened wide due to Schöhl 2, hard to define, fascinating - it picks you up on its way to another universe. After a beautiful melancholic meandering intro with flute Sarau glides into a sensitive TripRock groove - my personal favourite. Fine organ layers, excellent bass lines and guitars matching with Manuel Göttsching. The song ends with a sudden death much too early and you are back and present with the one and only avoidable question: what can I expect from this band in the future? 'Morbus' seems to be ELECTRIC ORANGE's masterpiece at the moment. As for the first impressions you might think it's monotonous here and there. But if you take some time the album unfolds its beauty. For the summary a must have - not only for Krautrock fans - get it and enjoy! |

Not straight Psych-rock, but close enough to merit a mention here in this thread:
Un? L' Oeil Du Sourd Jazz Rock/Fusion
Review by

![]() Formed in 2004 in Rennes, Bretagne in the north of France as a quartet of guitar, drums, saxophone and keyboards, the lineup got expanded with the addition of a violonist and vocalist (chanting/vocalization would be a more appropriate description). In 2009 they self-released their first album, Un?. Long multi-part compositions, filled with heavy sounding guitars, enchanting keyboards and powerful drumming (with a variety of other instruments), fronted by saxophone and voices (female mostly), the music is otherworldly in a way, mixing styles together and a generous amount of experimentation with sounds and atmosphere. At times very cool sounding, while at others demented and crazy (the opener Ods is a fine example of these extremes in their music), their music is eclectic in nature and consists of jazz, psychedelic rock, electronic manipulations and even zeuhl (listen to the bass playing and chanting in Ods and in Here I Am J(H) for example). Their music sounds passionate, if only for the female vocalization by Mathilde Clavier (I think), and the instruments that accompanies her, be it the violin on A.C or the saxophone in Ods. But passion and zeal, while prevalent here, are part of the sound. Haunting vibes are abundant and playing around a theme in a jam-like manner seems to be something they like doing. It's not done off-hand, though. Thought is put into it with regards to how each instrument is contributing to the ornamentation of the pattern being played repetitively, whether it's the guitar, violin, keyboards or sax. A sense of mystery is seeping through in the longer tracks, Ods, Deux Trains?, Here I am J (h), driven by these elements mentioned in a hypnosis-inducing fashion. The tension increases as the music proceeds, reaching higher peaks (Deux Trains) and then even changing direction altogether (Ods, Deux Trains). This album is quite a trip. A dynamic affair, it covers a wide range of sonic peaks and valleys,
high-energy segments and cooler, calmer grounds. Its eclectic nature, mixture of jazz-rock with
psychedelic-rock and zeuhl is well done, appealing and leaves me exhausted (in a good way) at the
end. Being a first album, they may very well refine their sound, and remove the more rough parts of
their music (though I can't personally find fault in that) and go for a more unified and cleaner
sound. In spite of this, I find this work charming and to my taste, very satisfying.
This band and album are a great discovery for me and I look forward to more from them. http://www.myspace.com/loeildusourd Edited by avestin - December 25 2009 at 15:28 |

Try Psychedelic Monsterjam or Amon Guru for some more recent albums in that category. From the only Amon Guru album I edspecially like "Krakatau". Don't expect to find any melodies on that album; the musicians are clearly out to make noises on their various instruments. There is a lot of rhythm though, and the drums are excellent, as always when Mani Neumeier plays. These rhythms, combined with the noises made on the melody instruments, create a strange atmosphere. Definitely not an album for everyone; I like it a lot.
Psychedelic Monsterjam sound a lot like early Guru Guru, which is no wonder since with Ax Genrich and Mani Neumeier there are two thirds of the first Guru Guru line-up aboard; only the bass player is different. If you like early Guru Guru, then Psychedelic Monsterjam will be right up your alley. It will be quite difficult to get access to the albums of Psychedelic Monsterjam though since they came out in limited editions only. |

Quite a good thread, some fine mentions. I'd like to contribute German Space Rockers; Golem. I've never really been interested in the overblown sounds of Hidria Spacefolk and similar contemporaries, but luuuv fuzzy psych jams, and this sh*t is drenched in layered synth/keys, grooving drums and bass, with some seriously awesome guitar, whilst still being totally easy to listen to, and sounding amazingly recent. Their only album, Orion Awakes, is out of print, I think, so would be practically impossible to find, but it's possible to acquire a copy off the internet - if one is so inclined. |

And again a blind pick from the psych bands list:
HEAVY WATER EXPERIMENTS Heavy Water Experiments biography HEAVY WATER EXPERIMENTS is a US based outfit that was formed in 2006, as a direct continuation of the band Imogene. The main man in this outfit is singer, songwriter and multi-intrumentalist David Melbye; and the second regular member is El Salvador born drummer and percussionist Roberto Salguero. The band's self-titled debut album was issued in 2008, containing vintage influenced psychedelic hard rock with a distinct mainstream tinge to it. Music hard to categorize, but well received by critics and listeneres alike. http://www.heavywaterexperiments.com/ http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/heavywaterex http://www.myspace.com/heavywaterexperiments |

In 1994, a year before I had to enlist in the army, a local band, ROCKFOUR, released their second album, The Man Who Saw It All.
Their first album was full of beautiful songs with nostalgia flowing from them to days of old in the late 60's / early 70's pop-rock. With this second album, they went forward to create a psychedelic rock ground, with a muddy sound, haunting melodies and beautiful vocal harmonies and songs that seem to connect to each other (though they don't). This album (as well as the first and the next one in line) is in Hebrew. And in my opinion the one album to get from the band, if you like (perhaps simplistic, yet) efficient, emotion-provoking and journey-like. Here is their PA bio: Rockfour biography Israeli psyche-pop trio RockFour are tough to pigeon-hole. Formed in the Tel Aviv suburb of Holon, they began playing together during military service, and developed a repertoire of original songs in Hebrew and English. Tipping their berets to the Moody Blues, Teardrop Explodes and The Zombies, RockFour convincingly married The Byrds & Bowie, updating it with 21st century panache. In 2000, four albums in, RockFour made the controversial switch to English lyrics which immediately catapulted them onto the international scene and branded them Israels finest (and only?) rock export. And they havent let up: RockFour is now well on its way to conquering the world with a unique brand of neo-psychedelia and progressive pop. Its a mix that works: Rock Four have sold over 30,000 records in the Middle East and Europe. 2001 was the year RockFour caught the eyes and ears of the North American media. Rolling Stone Magazine critic Richie Unterberger chose ONE FANTASTIC DAY (Third-Ear Records) as one of his Top 10 albums of the year; both the New York Times and the New York Press hyped their live show and the band went on to be featured on the nationally broadcasted NPR radio show, All Things Considered. Over on the west coast it was the LA Times and Under The Radar that raved about the band. Headlining many prestigious rock festivals including SXSW, CMJ and the International Pop Overthrow, the band went on to sign with guitar pop label, Rainbow Quartz. Their second release, NATIONWIDE, is the follow up to their break-through album ANOTHER BEGINNING (Rainbow Quartz 2002). NATIONWIDE was recorded at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit by Jim Diamond. The complex song-craft, interwoven with pristine pop harmonics, is balanced on a raw, energetic immediacy. RockFour wear their prog-pop sensibilities well: chiming 12-string jangle, classic rock riffing, and clever atonal squalls of lead drive this recording into the arena of 70s rock. NATIONWIDE echoes The Cars, ELO and at times vintage Squeeze, while the guitar playing evokes classic Robert Fripp and Jimmy Page dueling with Sonic Youth, all the while retaining a psychedelic dose of early Pink Floyd and The Byrds. ![]() ![]() 4.67 | 2 ratings The Man Who Saw It All 1994 Songs / Tracks Listing 1. Pitom (3:48) - Eli Lulai / guitars, acoustic guitar, vocals "The Man Who Saw It All" is the 2nd studio album of Rockfour. The album characterized with 60's style psychedelic sound. Although the tracks were pretty long and complicated, and part of them are instrumental, he was very successful producing hits like "The Man Who Saw It All" (Track 2) , "Time Machine" (T4) , "Hole In The Moon" (T3) and "Any Direction" (T5) and many people define it as the best israeli album ever. Isn't it a bit disturbing to say that, for an album who is just 12 years old? Rockfour like to play it 60's in "TMWSIA" in every aspect: from the non-conceptual instrumental tracks, the divided sound (Guitars on the left vehicle, vocals on the right - see track 02), to the sweet composings with background vocals and great harmonies. After the galloping open ("Suddenly"), Eli Lulai and his friends start to symbol the power of one of the best albums i've ever heard with "The Man Who Saw It All", "Hole In The Moon" (where Baruch Ben-Yitzhak defines a dirty guitar sound for generations to come), "Time Machine" (which can remind you of The Beatles' "For No One", in a way) and one of the best psychedelic tracks ever to be recorded in hebrew (if not the best of them) - "Any Direction". If i can be perfectly urnest, i believe that until track no. 8, "Late No Longer", Rockfour gives you - track by track - pure israeli classics. The album grows up with the listener, so that he can learn to love even the less communicative in it - for example, if in the beginning i couldn't stop hearing "The Man Who Saw It All" and "Time Machine", i began learning to love the complexity and the beauty of the storming guitars and electric bass of Baruch & Mark in "Sometimes", and i litterally fell on the floor when Eli started screaming and Iser before "It"'s chorus. I can't even switch tracks in this album, because Rockfour have created a musical journey, when every track builds the next track, and the album as a whole. This is not a concept album, but with the time the listener turns it to a concept album deep inside. So is the best israeli album ever a perfect song compliation? no. There are some tracks that steals this title from "TMWSIA". There are not bad tracks, or even medicore - but with the high standard that Rockfour puts here, even "good" tracks can interrupt the musical orgasm that Rockfour provides. You can mention "Late No Longer" and "Me, Myself And What Comes Between Us" (Track no. 09), are obstacles in this album's way to the top of the international music mountains. After Track 10, comes "Witness", which is really an exposition to one of the album's peaks - "End Of The Road". In "End" Rockfour proves they can be cynical, sharp & rageous and provides a full well-done rock anthem, with extra-ordinary drumming by Iser Tennenbaum, and mainly the singing by Eli Lulai, that will reach perfection in "Supermarket". The album ends with two instrumental tracks - "The Man Who Saw Too Much" and "Dust", that besides being a stage to Rockfour's talent, really contributes to the circle feeling that the album gives, like commands you to press play again and to re-experience the journey you have just witnessed to. So if the Rockfour-haters, the ones that define them as "A very good band, that didn't reached it's full potential" (since when a rock band became a 12 year old student?!) - "TMWSIA" is the israeli album i've most enjoyed listening to, and i recommend it very much, because it's one of the best things that can happen to your musical archive. Now going backwards to earlier times:
AHORA MAZDA Ahora Mazda biography This delightful Dutch band had its roots in 1965, when Rob van Wageningen (flute, saxophone) and Peter (bass) and Winky Abbink (drums) brothers played together in a band called Free Art Group, along with other musicians. This band played music, mostly inspired by classic and avant-garde jazz musicians, namely, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra and John Coltrane. In 1968, they were joined by Tony Schreuder in bass, renaming themselves Group 67/68, and Peter Abbink switching to guitar. During concerts in Felix Meritis they met Ruud Tegelaar, manager of center Fantasio, who offered them to become the house band in Fantasio. They also changed their name once again to Ahora Mazda, a corrupt version of the chief deity of Zoroastrianism, Ahura Mazda. (Zarathustra religion is also called "Mazdaizm.) The name was suggested by Tegelaar. The band was known for their long jam sessions, but they recorded shorter and more arranged songs for their self-titled debut (and only) album. The album was recorded in three days and released on May 31, 1970. During the next year, Tony Schreuder and Winky Abbink had some problems playing and rehearsing. At concerts they needed the help of substitute musicians, like guitarist Jan Landkroon and Michiel Krijnen. Abbink was replaced by Paul van Wageningen, who played drums in Groep 1850. Because of these difficulties and the lack of atmosphere that came with the substitutes the band ceased to exist. Their music is a reflection of the "spacy" music (as implied by the name of the first track in the album) in Netherlands, yet, they owe more to the Kosmische Music scene of Germany than the symphonic approach of their fellow countrymen such as Focus, and of those which were yet to come, like Kayak and Finch. Though the tracks are relatively short (the longest clocking shortly over 9 minutes), they still retain the "jamming" and "experimental" features, which are landmarks of the kosmische Krautrock sound. The CD reissue adds 5 shorter bonus tracks, which still have the same characteristics. Highly recommended for psyche/space/krautheads! ![]() The point I'm very surprised is that AHORA MAZDA seem to play relaxed from start to finish, without any prickles or needles on their mind. We can see the fact in Peter Abbink's laidback guitar solo or Rob van Wageningen's graceful flute one. But wait please don't be deceived - ingeniously AHORA MAZDA has set a trap as an album. Above mentioned aside, I feel the most ingenious part should be the rhythm section by Tony and Winky, two skilled but inconspicuous (sorry!) men. Really they can absorb us listeners with comfortably streaming beat and tempo...I wanna say the basis is absolutely their steady rhythm. Magic, they can do. Needless to say on the first track Spacy Tracy, even the simple bass sounds on the next Timeless Dream are heavy and strict, suitable for the rigid ground of this song. Over this rhythm section, a graphic flute, a terrific guitar, and psychic chorus should spread one by one. Furthermore in Oranje Vrijstraat mysterious and spiritual percussion spelling should knock us away deeply to Ahorholic world. I always wonder why such a complex beat can immerse us like an amphetamine. Another impressive part is Peter's lazy and fatigued voices. Indeed his voice may be underevaluated but this psychedelic world do needs his characteristic growlin'. Like a junkie, he goes through songs with his obscurity, especially the fourth track Fallen Tree. This floating atmosphere continues on Power, that has depressive and "indoor" air with twisted horizon. And at last in Fantasio African beats by rising-up-to-the space percussion should keep us holding under MAZDANDELION-coloured psychedelia! They released this album as their one and only work in 1970 - again surprised. They already
have conquered our mind with their trap!
Ahora Mazda Ahora Mazda Psychedelic/Space Rock Review by Agemo ![]() On their one and only album, they decided not to play the elongated sets, but more conveniently arranged songs. This doesn't mean you get easy to swallow music. The free form music still exists, as can be heard in tracks like "Oranje Vrijstaat", the most avant-garde of the album or in the second half of "Spacy Tracy" with a long Hendrix-like guitar solo and a very spacy ending. More structured are the haunting "Timeless Dream" and "Power". "Fallen Tree" is the most rocking track of the album with a heavy guitar solo and excellent flute playing. On "Fantasio" several percussion instruments are used. On the CD reissue five bonus tracks are added. These give away some of the magic from the original album. Although it looks like they are tracks, they a more sort of random chosen parts from a studio session. They may give some insight in how a concert of Ahora Mazda might have sounded like, but for me they are not so interesting. In conclusion, this is a psychedelic masterpiece from the Netherlands. This album, together with Group 1850's "Paradise Now"
(1969) and Surprieze's "Zeer Oude Klanken en Heel Nieuwe Geluiden" (1972) are the top three of psychedelic rock from this
country. It is recommended to everyone with a love for some old psychedelic rock. Especially when you want some jazz added to
the mix.

![]() The last five bonus tracks are a bunch of excerpts from the band's collective jazz improvisations, which sound sometimes resemble the primitive passages of SYD BARRET's "Lanky", sometimse the cosmic electronic soundwalls of HAWKWIND, and sometimes as the ethnic perscussion gear swithces on with the saxophone, MILES DAVIS's "Bitched Brew" could be another association. Sadly the excerpts are only cuts, varying in length from under two minutes to over four, beginning and ending from a silent void. I wouldn't have mind hearing some improvisation "mistakes", rather the hearing only glimpses of the grooves. Also another solution might have been to try construct a collage out of them, just like MILES DAVIS did in his fabulous record mentioned before. But anyway, I really liked the little
melancholic but still laid back feeling of this album, and I would
recommend it warmly to anybody liking both 70's psychedelic blues/jazz
rock and dreamy impressionistic collective jams. Also the flute
melodies are here very strong, so the fans of that instrument might
want to try giving this album a listen. If you want to see the last
bonus tracks as an integral part of the album quality, remove one star
from the rating.
