Arena. Even their least good albums are very good, and their best albums are masterpieces! Live albums, EPs, DVDs etc. are good. Clap

King Crimson

Most bands I like have had some albums that have been compromised by commercial pressures (Love Beach, Big Generator) or lackluster performance. But Crimson always seems to satisfy me.

DFA has 3 masterful (5 stars from me) studio albums and a live i have yet to purchase.
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Is everything as good as Quelque Part ? (The only one I own but if it were a female I'd propose tomorrow)

If this was 1989 and not 2009, I'd say Manfred Mann's Earth Band, but alas the only band that can do no wrong for me after thinking about it is Symphony X.

They are not my favorite band and yet I feel all 7 of their studio albums and 1 live album are excellent with nary a song that "does wrong". From the first album w/o Sir Russell Allen all the way up to Paradise Lost, it's all clear of "wrong-doing".

Regarding bands with a smaller discography: Riverside definately and--I haven't seen this band on here yet--EPICA. They have produced 4 steller studio albums plus 1 fantastic live album and suffice it to say, I believe they will keep concocting exceptional albums well into the 2010's.

Is there such an animal as a band that can do no wrong?

With every band that I have ever listened to (Spaning 50+ years) there has always been a 'Why did they do that' moment. It may be some small thing like poorly mixed track or a more fundamental issue with the choice of style or lyrical content.

To say that a band can do no wrong surely must mean that the listener is not as concerning as they think they actually are, and, more importantly, not as objective as they need to be.

King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Rush, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, The Cars, Steely Dan, The Doors, The Smiths, and Supertramp.

NOTE:  I love Yes, but there are a couple albums that I do not listen to often.  However, Yes has such a big catalog, so the percentage of GREAT stuff is high.

Agreed! The only bands that I think could approach this category proposed by the OP are ones who made only one or two albums that were both stellar, then never made an album again.

I do think instead of looking for the perfect band, which ones have the highest percentage of quality material. Yes does qualify on that criteria.

Tough question, but I'll go with Deep Purple and King Crimson, because even their less satisfactory albums (like "Slaves and Masters" and "Three of a Perfect Pair") have good moments.

Like October Project  (prog-related I think).

I agree with Catfood03, some bands best and most memorable work is their first album, which they then spend the rest of their career trying to live up too.

On a personal note, I don't have a band that has done no wrong, but have several that I admire the quality of what they produced, whether it is for its innovative style (1st Pink Floyd album) or development (Jethro Tull).

Music is such a personal thing, that only the listener themselves and not a forum group, can decide if a band is worthy of the accolaides we individually bestow on them.

The Mothers of Invention, Rush and Porcupine Tree.  I love almost all of their albums, and the ones that I don't love I still find are good. With RUsh Hold Your FIre and Power Windows are both okay but I don't love them, same thing with the Mothers' "With Reuben and the Jets". And well, I generally love all of PT's stuff.

Miles Davis especially in the 70'S. I've never heard anything so perfect.

King Crimson.

" Why did they do that?" Sounds like another thread. Hawkwind has a lot of "why did they do that?" Moments. I thought it was all over with Distant Horizons.

Marillion and Fish, though I have to admit some things have had to grow on me, but at this moment, nothing from either of those artists is average or less than to me. Including live CD's, bootlegs, DVD's, etc. Sometimes the soundquality of the bootlegs get's the best of my ears, but I can't blame the band for it seeing as they haven't really released the material that I am referring to and they even haven't had a hand in recording it, so...
