Devin Townsend isn't perfect, but he's incredibly consistent. He's got a few goofs, though.

King Crimson without a doubt.
Can't think of any others though; Pink Floyd could have made it if it wasn't for Momentary Lapse and The Division Bell. What was Gilmour thinking?

Probably writing some good music for a change after the borefest that was The Final Cut. He didn't quite make it on Lapse yet, but Division is very good I think.
(This was perhaps an unnecessarily exaggerated answer as I've gotten a bit of hold of The Final Cut too lately. Still I think the albums that came after it are a lot better.)

I can only say this of a few of my favorite artists.
I would say probably Tool was the first band that came to mind, as well as possibly Devin Townsend as someone mentioned before.
I can't say it about Mastodon, my absolute favorite band, since I didn't care for Lifesblood.
Nor can I say it about Isis, my second favorite band, because I wasn't the biggest fan of their earlier grindcore stuff.
I could probably put down certain post metal bands like Pelican and maudlin of the Well who, despite having smaller discographies, found their niche fairly early and have been consistently entertaining me with their offerings ever since.

I can't think of any band that can do no wrong, even when it comes to my favorite bands. i don't care for the teen pop side of the beatles, you know pre-rubber soul. I don't care for Queen's Hot Space. Dream Theaters latest and systematic chaos could have been better, rush's power windows could have been better. Genesis went downhill after trick of the tail. Metallica slowed down and simplified things to much with the black album, Mastodons Blood mountain was dissapointing. Iron Maidens Blaze Bailey era albums are awfull. Judas Priest had some embarrassing material between screaming for vengeance and Painkiller. I like a lot of bands but none of them have blown my mind with every song and every album, yet what matters is the bands that can pull of a lot of good work throughout a long career and most of the bands i have mentioned have done that, for the more recent bands we will have to wait and see.

Where it concerns artists with 10+ albums, King Crimson and Rush never dropped below 3 stars for me.
For the artist with around 10 albums that would be VDGG, Opeth and Porcupine Tree.
Artist with less then 10 albums don't really qualify I'd say.

He was thinking now that the bum Roger is gone we can make some more meaningful music. Those were great albums. Come to think of it, there's very litle Floyd that I won't listen to. Some of their early material perhaps.
What would be the weakest Crimson album ? Beat ?

Floyd. As close to perfection as a band can be.
Genesis. I have played Calling All Stations recently for the first time in about a decade, and it is much better than I originally thought. Not great but a good album. The only other Genesis that does not get played is the first one.
Tangerine Dream. Loved them all unitl the early 90's. It was a little tough as Jerome Froese found his way. Back on board up to about 3 years ago. Now there is too much remixing, remastering, rerecording and not enough new material. Kudos to them for trying the Dante Trigogy but I did not care for it. More than enough albums to make up for a couple of subpar ones.
Elton John. Not prog except for maybe Funeral for a Friend. Ranges from good to excellent for everything except Victim of Love.

Porcupine Tree totally; also Rush (with few downs)
EDIT: I forgot Tool. They are great, but with them is easy: they do an album every 5 years... Each one is perfect anyway.

Hello, pop pickers,
for me it's got to be Emerson Lake and Palmer - when I first heard them it was like a vision into the future.
They were responsible for so many "firsts", it frustrates me how much they tend to be overlooked in favour
of so many bands who owe them so much. Anyway love the forum, it has introduced me to so many other
bands, and some I'd forgotten about. Proud to belong to such a fraternity.
All the best for the holiday season and 2010.

Now that I think again, Tull comes very, very close here, especially if you consider how long they've been at it........I know people will point to this or that album as proof to the contrary, but they have been amazingly consistent, if you "get" them.

Nobody mentioned Mostly Autumn. I don't like their last album very much, as I think that Angela Goldthorpe was a key element in that group, but it's not really bad...

For me this is definitely Transatlantic  what an awesome project that is! I really love all of their 3 albums. Some others I can mention honestly in here are Ayreon and Shadow Gallery. Some quality music at its best

kayo dot- although only three albums in all three are of incredibly consistent quality.
Can had a 4/5 album brilliant streak
magma - only one slip up (merci) and its still pretty fun. check out the ratings
animal collective - genius and they're what 5 or 6 albums in and consistently changing direction? great stuff

UFO ,Saga ,Blue Oyster Cult ,Deep Purple ,YES ,Frank Marino ,John Wetton ,Steve Howe ,Savatage ,Uriah Heep ,the Sweet ,Kansas - I know most of these bands aren't prog but hey.........
