Well, I might say that Tool is really a band that could make harm, especially to my ears, at least the Undertow album did it to my ears is annoying and has an awfull sound... at least, Tool without that album maybe won't harm anyone...

Genesis is (at least) two different bands that have carried on one name; the point of departure is when I say it was, but that may be questioned.....anyway the first incarnation did not really stumble at all imho.

For example JTull.Com.
Other artists simply committed artistic Hari Kari. Triumvirat. Even some of Amon Duul's later 70s material. Jan Akkerman lost his contract with A&M Records because of his atrocious '79 album Jan Akkerman 3 ( fortunately he came back ).
Another band I've always stuck with is Guru Guru. Regardless of what direction they took Mani never forgot his psychedelic roots. Always something spaced out on every album.

All bands have an album or two that most hard core fans don't like or rate very well. Must of the time, these albums represent a transition in the band's music, and experiment of some sort, and if you listen to them from this perspective, you'll find out that they are not that bad, and rather represent and experiment on sound, style, influences, etc .

I wouldn't call them clunkers. I liked the way they took some chances. Audacious.

Most bands that can do no wrong are bands that quit while the were ahead: Led Zeppelin UK Rare Bird Blind Faith Lynyrd Skynyrd The Beatles
More recent bands that are still going strong: Tool Riverside
A band that hasn't had a chance to disappoint, due to having only one album yet: Them Crooked Vultures
And of course: Pink Floyd (yes, even The Final Cut and the Gilmour-era)

Good to know, I guess I should put them on the active list. I also forgot to add Porcupine Tree on the list of new bands that so far have not disappointed me.

I guess this is a topic where personal taste and preference have top priority.
Just like you, Jethro Tull is my favorite band, and I love all their music. I would also include King Crimson, Steve Hackett and Camel of the old bands that are still somehow active. Gentle Giant, The Gabriel-era Genesis and Goblin of the bands that don't play anymore, and Mike Keneally and James Sudakov of the most recent prog acts.

Perhaps not comparatively--"Sally" is damn funny, though.

The only band I can think of is The Beatles, I love every piece of music they made. Other than them, I don't know, I love Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, and a lot of bands that I like most of their album, or all of them, but there's always some of their stuff that I consider a bit weak compared to some of their best. The thing about The Beatles is that every album they released was better or at least as good as the last one, they would have never disappointed me if I would have been around back then. I'm not a big fan of albums like Please Please Me or With The Beatles, but considering the context they were great albums. Most other bands released the weaker albums later in their career. It probably has to do with the fact that they broke up at the right time, but I believe they would have keep making great albums for a few more years at least.

I love The Police to bits but I have to agree with Chopper here. They did produce a few tracks which are less than stellar (Landlord springs easily to mind at this juncture).

To say "can do NO wrong" is a pretty big order as has already been pointed out. Putting aside all the bands with limited discographies (3 albums or less) I'd have to say King Crimson, After Crying. Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin, Thomas Dolby, The Police. And just a whack of other bands that come so close but somehow managed to sneak in a stinker or two or the years as to preclude their inclusion on this it. |
The Police!!! What about DeDoDooDoDe Da DDa or whatever it's called. I don't like the Police but they did produce some good pop music but also some utter sh*te as my girlfriend's CD collection will testify to. |

Well 5 albums in (with the 6th due this month) and Big Big Train have yet to record a bum track. Then IQ are probably the next best rated for consistancy.

Even then there were extenuating circumstances. |
Wow, I love that song! The guitar solo is outstanding...

Really? I think it's probably the worst solo he did, but then it was a rush job as the Stones were waiting to use the studio.
