Oh, it's okay, they're sending me another one because of that one missing disc, so you can come and pick yours up from here. Or from Kuopio, I'll be there for Christmas... It felt very weird mentioning Kuopio a while ago and not getting any Kupo pictures. You should get someone to cover your duties when you're away.

The downside to the Davis box of sweets is the fact that I'm going to have to delete 70 cd's worth of stuff from my Ipod It's painful enough with four or five new albums, but 52...

Am I the only one who doesn't care for box sets, special editions, physical copies and the like?

It is a lot cheaper than buying individually, especially since I don't have most of the albums in it. Also, Miles Davis is awesome.

I like to get physical editions for albums I really care about (like Albert Ayler), for physically owning them and because I don't 100% trust the MP3 encoding. Not a fan of box sets because having different versions of the same song upsets me because I don't have the patience to sit through and listen for the differences so I don't know which one to listen to. The only box sets I would ever be interested in are the Henry Cow for all the unreleased improvisations and Albert Ayler for some of the unreleased live versions and book and photos. The Miles box set is unnecessary because I don't think I will ever feel the need to own such an extensive collection of his work. I read part of Jazz by Ken Burns, and he is kind of awful. He is willing to give a grudging respect to '50s avant-gardists, but after that he trashes Miles electric and declares jazz dead in the sixties.

I don't ever buy/get MP3's unless thats the only way to get the music, and thats just because I prefer to have it as a hard copy CD. I'll occasionally buy special editions depending on the content (If its bonus tracks, then usually yes, but if just slightly different packaging, no). I don't own any music boxsets, although I've ordered the Opeth Candlelight Boxset, but thats because its hard to find those Opeth albums in Australia, and its relatively cheap. |

The last box set I got saved me quite a nice bit of money, it was the Magma box and I picked it up when it was only around $90. There are several I want to get, I think they're a nice way to get a lot of music from bands you don't have a lot of music from. |

Nope. A little mini-project to give away before the year comes to a close. Without giving too much away (because I know how my plans go...this "mini-project" could become something monstrous and never be released until 2015)... This all got started once I moved for two reasons. The Internet was down (haha, nothing to do, right?), and I was fooling around with my acoustic guitar and what I was doing took me in unexpected directions. Also, I bought a new bass that really has a great sound, I think. So I've been dying to use it. Anyway, this creature is growing into something of a continuous piece (my guess it'll wind up being between 15 and 20 minutes), which I think will divide up nicely into several tracks. We will see how it goes. |

The Magma box would actually be a good deal for me if I liked Magma since I only have them on eMusic MP3 right now. But I can't imagine that's the case for most prospective buyers so I'm not sure why they felt it necessary to bundle an exclusive CD with all the others.

Now the Magma box probably wouldn't be a good deal for you, it's out of print and as of right now is going for $350 used on Amazon. |

Looks like they've already sold all the (Magma) boxes made, possibly - the box doesn't exist on Wayside, and Amazon claims it's "discontinued by the manufacturer". I'm glad I got it when I did. edit: you already said this. Edited by Padraic - November 24 2009 at 14:31 |
