It's a "web browser" ... it's a software application that you can browse the web with. On a Windows PC you also have the "Explorer", which you can use to browse your computer drives with.

It depends on how much you depend on add-ons, I guess. I can't imagine the internet without adblock plus. Chrome has insanely fast javascript and is faster overall, but Firefox uses less memory and is faster than IE.

essentially the idea that its only for Internet is also somewhat inaccurate.

you have a file browser as well, for you M$ users, its windows explorer. wikis disambiguation differentiates between the 2, which is a bit missleading, as for example IE does both.

and on the firefox/chrome debate, firefox wins for me, yes chrome is a bit faster, but having to view all that ads and flash animation annoy me.

if noscript and a few other addons become compatible with chrome I may change my mind

That isn't quite true - older versions did, but that was (in computing terms) a long time ago. They are two different programs (IEXPLORE.EXE and EXPLORER.EXE) - if you attempt to browse a file structure with Iexplorer it will launch a copy of Explorer.exe and if you type a URL into Explorer's address bar it will launch a copy of Iexplore.exe.

Smile basically correct, Dean - but something I don't really get (under Windows XP)

Windows Explorer options: open every new Explorer instance in an own task (probably not literally translated)
this works fine - one exception though:
I launched IE and browsed a valid directory path - a new Explorer instance was opened - but not a new task resp. PID

when I close IE, the Explorer instance remains opened - however only the main Explorer Shell task is shown  Confused

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. My friend set up my piece of crap with all kinds of other little icons and the only one I use is internet explorer.

 I have no clue what the other sh*t is for except Word which I don't  even know how to use. Beleive it or not I still send hand written personal & business letters and most people are either flattered or say things like " that's cool ".
