Nice. I'd have to hack in to an admin account and ban you if you gave it any less. Tongue

I finally stopped procrastinating and wrote my first review.  This one was of Quella Vecchia Locanda's "Il Tempo Della Gioia."  I gave it four stars.

It's also Van de Graaff.

Wiki says:
The name was suggested by Smith (the misspellings are accidental).

No big deal to me.

That has always bothered me. Maybe they just had a weird way of spelling it.

Ah, of course.

I would have agreed unconditionally, but I was in the mood for clarifications. Wink

No kidding.

Was brushing my teeth, when dad yelled "look out the window", and I saw him. Stood there until he disappeared far down the boulevard.

The street itself was pretty empty, but the few people there were also starring in disbelief.

Unfortunately, the horse definitely seemed disoriented. In a good shape, but not quite the stallion.

Hi Greg,

My count is currently at four times, and the first was the most special, because I just stopped doing anything, put the headphones on, and listened in a trance. The effect was fantastic. I like Part I for its parts with surprisingly free or let's say malleable form. Mirrored in Part IV, it's less powerfull, and I think it doesn't end that well the epic (the last seconds, though, are fairly predictable, and good).

I like Fuhnerarium Kahnt. A friend who saw Magma play live said E-R is really, really dark - something I feel it in certain hotspots, but not overall. But the addenda, in form of Fuhnerarium Kahnt is in the hopeless, pitch-black zone of their music, and it struck me just like that. Superb, that's all I can say.

Other than Part IV and the annexed pieces, there's nothing arguable about E-R, it's really good. The first section of Part II is exactly what I wanted to hear from the old classic fragments, and it's sung with a good amount of flair, accents and emotion. Doweri wi loi, doweri wi loi, doweri wi loi, doweri wi loi, doweri wi rheu si... mmmmm!

There is though a three seconds fright, as the whole singing ends with a brutal shout (Du zeihne storme werden! - so I hear it as phonetically as possible), and it the context of the recent controversy, this does sound a bit fishy, and even Vander converts to what seems almost the Fuhrer's voice. Goosebumps!

Developement up to Zombies is also nice, and when that part kicked it, with the bass, I immediately though "descend an octave". And it did after seconds. I love the more bassy Zeuhl from Magma (such as Ork's Alarm, from Kohntarkosz), so these moments are gems for me.

As for Part III, I initially thought the first section drags a bit (now I think it fuels on to a new chapter pretty quickly, and well too), but the rest is also incredible.

---
I'm still studying the album, through repeated listens. One would say from the things above that I'm definitely impressed by E-R (which I am indeed), in a way this is better than most. I do however stick to K.A., mainly because it was a revelation, at the time I first heard it. Just like E-R, it has certain fragments that don't shine out, otherwise its Part I is spotless, and the best of the other three also combined to something asploding.

For me, Ëmëhntëhtt-Rê is an incredibly satisfying album.  I find it can be so beautiful and fun and.... Even though I've listened to it so many times since I got it, I could not review it yet because I'd want to cross-referencing which would take a lot of time and thought.  If I were not to factor in anything such as innovation, originality (considering what they've done before), and judge the album on its own merits without comparison, it would get five stars from me.  I prefer it to K.A. -- I think I'd give K.A. a four. The keyboards in KA III are not that satisfying for me.  I find the newest is well-nuanced, well-textured, and I love the instrumentation and feel.  I don't like the last two tracks so much, but I look at those as coda.  It can be so joyous, as can KA.  What hindered my ebullient reaction somewhat to the album when I first heard it  has to do with familiarity, that I knew the music on the whole already so well, so not quite the element of surprise that would have immediately elevated it.  But I really think it's a terrific album, and I don't think I could rate it less than a 4.5.  Magnificent and mature, even if it has some inanely geekish moments.  It has the best of Magma (post 1001 Degrees) and Offering in the mix.

I still would do things a little differently with the album if I could. Sometimes some parts are mixed down a  little more than I would like, the balancing could be better in parts, and in some cases there is not quite as much as full 3D sounds as I would like, and would have added some more elements to the music in places, and I would have brought in some more harmonic complexity to certain parts, while keeping the simplicity of others.  When I was listening to it before with headphones I was adding kinds of harmonies to it in my mind (something I commonly do when I listen to music because harmonies are so important to me).  It would benefit from more complexity, more contrast still, and can sound forced in parts. Never-the-less, a wonderful album, I think.  I wonder how I'll feel about it in another month, though.

I think I overplayed it a bit though, and so as not to get tired of it, I'm listening to albums by  Egisto Macchi now.

Wow.

It's the greatest album EVAR LOL

But yeah, it's not a 5 for me, but absolutely a 4.

According to PA's rating system, yes.

According to RYM, for the moment I casted a 4.5 for it.

Which is the equivalent of 8.5 towards 9, out of 10 - I recently work with the 10-point scale, deluding myself it's a smaller clusterf**k than with the 5-star scale LOL.

In reality (and inside Magma's universe), I'd put it somewhere between the two (4 and 4.5).

Actually, the device you are talking about is a Van de Graaf Generator.  For some reason the band screwed up the name.

Today, in Physics, we used a VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR!  Unfortunately, I didn't bring any of my CD's to play during class (my teacher even said he would allow it,) but I still threw in a few quotes here and there throughout the hour instead.  The Van Der Graaf Generator shocked you when you put your finger near it.  Sometimes it's electric field was very small, and other times it would shock you a foot away!  It was also the first time I ever got to hold a girl's hand (we were doing this experiment where we saw how electrons could travel from person to person.)
